Fun chess like strategy game
My kids love Hive. It’s like chess because each type of piece has a specific set of moves possible and the goal is related to capturing the royalty of the opponent. Unlike chess the play seems to have more variety given the play starts with adding pieces in whatever way you find strategic. My kids are in the gifted classes at school and youngest at 7 quite enjoyed it as it is accessible to younger players, through they can’t reach the full strategic options. My 19 year old and my husband are able to do more complex moves that anticipate enemies plans. This advanced thinking does slow game play.Materials and quality: these feel like a nice set of dominoes with the solid weighty plastic feel & well rounded edges.Given the adjacent tiles and the ability to move things from the edges and middle more finger dexterity & control is needed for this than picking up a chess or sorry piece.I love the small size for travel if your fingers are nimble. And if possible buy the version with some expansions included. The expansions themselves are overpriced.

Got what I expected.

A great expansion!
We love hive pocket, and these pieces are the perfect addition.
User
Pillbug completely changes the game!
I love and hate this piece.Like the other optional pieces, it significantly changes the game dynamics and strategies. It is a great addition! Can’t wait for the next one!

Nice addition to an excellent game
If you play the base game of Hive, the new pillbug piece adds new strategies and substantially changes how you approach the game! …soooo good!! 👌
User
Nice piece, should already be in Hive Pocket
If you play online you often play with this piece and get used to it. The price is very high compared to the other set. And if you are interested in Hive I would get Hive Pocket for the mosquito and the ladybug. I probably don't use the Pillbug to its maximum defensive ability. It can make games of Hive longer.
User
Must have for full game experience.
Quite a bit pricey for what you really get but it is a must have to play the game to its full potential.
User
fun expansion
not necessary to enjoy the base game, but this little guy is fun to employ

Rigolo

Worth it
It does seem absurd to spend half as much as the full set to buy one more piece, but I feel like the pillbug has really revitalised the game for us. It makes for a much more dynamic defensive strategy, and games have become less predictable as a result.
User
Elevated game experience
Essential for the full experience of hive. A great defensive piece that transforms the game.
