The book contains so many interesting facts that made me think why such facts are not mentioned in the history books we studied. Few of the the interesting facts are,1) Humayun’s love for Astrology ,the fact that he used to dress up as per the colour of the planets to which that day belonged.2) About the birth of king Akbar.Hamida gave birth to a baby boy in Rajput fortress of Umerkot. Humayun gave name to this boy as mentioned by Zinda Fil Ahmed of Jam in his dream Jalal –Ud-din-Muhammad Akbar. .3)Akbar used to be a part of thronging India crowds that would assemble for festivities and celebrations. He used to take care that no one would recognize him. This was just to know the cultures in India.4)He used to be surrounded by learned men from a plethora of fields ranging from writers ,musicians, theologians to philosophers, artists and astrologers.5) The information about the court of Navratnas is in detail.6) Nur Jahan was the only queen in Mughal history who had Gold and Silver coins issued in her name and one of the very few women who had the right to issue Farmans or royal decrees.7) Details given about Mughal Empresses was not known .8)In school we studied only one paragraph about Jahangir’s era golden period of Mughal art. In this book we come to know so many facts about the same.9) Daawat-e-Mughlai The world of Mughal cuisine. So many interesting facts.i)Each and every grain of rice was coated with silver warq to aid digestion.ii)There used to be a Head of kitchen Mir Bakwal who used to have an army of cooks, tasters, attendents and several other people.iii)Only five spices were used by Mughals in all their lip-smacking dishes and they were Cumin,Onion,Garam Masala,Saffron and Coriander.iv) The Ain-i-Akbari precisely divides the food of the royal kitchen into three categories Sufiyana,Haleem and Musamman .v)Alcohol had its own role too. Liquor was mixed with Rose water as cough syrup.10 )Details about love for literature for Emperor Akbar.Emperor Akbar left behind his library with 24000 books which was worth around 6.5 million rupees in those days.He translated two hindu epics The Ramayana and the Mahabharata.Emporar Akbar sat for several nights with the Persian translators to help them understand the gist of the story after assembling Hindu scholars.11) Shahi Mehfil –Akbar’s passion for music .The emperor had an excellent hand at playing the Mridangam. The Ain–i-Akbari mentions thirty six most brilliant musicians who graced Akbar’s court. List is topped by Mian Tansen.12) In Libas –e- Khas we know about the love for clothing. Royal Mughal clothing . If I continue to write I think I will have to copy the entire book. Each and every chapter, each and every sentence and each and every word is important and it is worth reading so much so that you don’t feel like skipping a sentence or a paragraph. The book tells you about the mughal Emperors,Mughal Princesses,Their interaction with people of different cultures ,their love for food, passion for music, eagerness to learn and understand art ,literature and love for beautiful clothing. Time to shift back to reading such amazing books than watching movies!
Sanaya at this juncture decided to author this beautiful book and succinctly laid before us all era of those rulers which dominated history for several decades. The book reflects not only Sanaya’s love for history, but also the immense research and thorough reading of the Mughal period. The book captures the nuances from every era and the ruler which dominated that period. With simple English yet elegant writing, Sanaya has taken us back to an absolutely glorious and culturally rich era.I personally feel that well researched books like this are capable of inspiring others to read books rather than relying on movies to know more about our history.
