New SAT Reading: Vice and Virtue in the Exploration of Democracy

I have done a few passages in the book (by Hume, Locke, and Machiavelli) and found them to be very challenging. I am an SAT tutor and I had to put 110% focus into reading them. I have not used this workbook with any students, and am on the fence as to whether it is too hard for 16 and 17 year old students. Only the best and brightest could do these passages. I will have do compare them to passages in the Official SAT Book for relative difficulty.I do appreciate the collection of essays. The only reason I deducted a star is I don't think the majority of passages will be as difficult as the ones found in this book. If you can do these passages well, you can do anything the SAT will throw at you.

I think this book is fantastic. I have been an SAT/ACT tutor for 20 years. The New SAT has Reading passages that are absolutely as challenging as those found in this book. In fact, the questions in the actual SAT can sometimes be more challenging than those in this book. I use this book with all of my students who are high-scoring (600+) on the verbal and are looking for 700+. They need a lot of practice with the most challenging passages on the New SAT, and this book provides that in abundance, along with well-designed questions that accurately mimic the actual test questions. I am very grateful that this book exists and recommend it heartily to all students who want to achieve a top score on the Reading section.

I'm an SAT/ACT Tutor and the Vice and Virtue book is one of my favorite resources for helping students work through those difficult, historic passages on the SAT, so I typically have about four or five on hand. Unfortunately, when I came to the last few copies of my last order, I found they each had a serious printing defect that defaced over 50% of the pages, basically making the books unusable. Unfortunately, since I purchased these books over a month ago, I don't have the option to exchange them. So just beware - be sure to thoroughly inspect the contents of each copy upon receipt.

A challenging collection of passages that also serve as interesting material to consider. The difficulty level does absolutely hone reading skills, particularly in its passage question design. Highly recommended as a means to help one attain a higher reading comprehension competency level.

the chapters are ranged from difficult to easy (old to new) which is very reasonable (chronologically) but not reasonable otherwise since the passages should range from easy to more challenging (reverse than that which occurs in the book)

Wonderful. Wonderful book for SAT reading. After going through all of the prep books, I found this book resembles the reading passages in the real test.

Good for a particular type of reading passage that makes for a very narrow area of the test being covered by the book. However, well done!
