While I didn't realize it was in German, I am intrigued by the challenge of learning the language to re-read it. A classic by every meaning of the word, Anthony Burgess does a marvellous job. Also it arrived 4 days early so I am thrilled!

I found this book that is very hard to fine. I just wanted the cover so that I could frame it and make an interesting picture. The book came in German , but I I was fine with that.

The random nature of ultraviolence is both its most frightening aspect and a clear indication of its evil. It leaves everyone feeling vulnerable because anyone could be a victim of an attack. And this is what makes this book so morally problematic. . In ordinary attempts to justify violence, some claim is made that gives a reason why the victim should be harmed. Such attempts focus on the identity of the recipient of justi'ed violence. In self-defense, one may harm one's assailant because the assailant poses a threat to one ís own well-being. In just war thinking there must be a just cause (usually aggression) and violence has to be focused exclusively against the aggressor. But ultraviolence spreads violence in a way that simply ignores the identities of its victims. It is random and unpredictable violence. In Michael Baur's words, it is "systematically unsystematic." The result of ultraviolence is to create panic and chaos, sometimes in order to advance a political agenda, although in the case of Alex and his droogs violence has to be divorced from a political agenda as a sort of nihilistic glee in causing disorder.
