You've got to love scrap quilts
Throughout my 50+ years as a quilter, I have always loved scrap quilts and I have long enjoyed reading articles by Bonnie Hunter on saving and using scraps to make quilt blocks and then making quilts with those blocks. My son gave me one of her books for my birthday last week, and I also received birthday money which I used to buy this book as well as her Essential Triangle tool for when making flying geese and other triangle pieces. I got this book today and I am looking forward to trying out some of the ideas with my own scrap saver method that I have used for years which mostly consists of what I call 2 x 4 pieces. Not only did the book explain how to construct the blocks, but also showed step-by-step diagrams of how to construct the blocks so that whether you are a visual reader or or one that prefers reading instructions or for those that want both. The front of the book explains how to use the Essential Triangle tool as well, so if you buy one of those, no reason to not be able to make perfect blocks. I also loved the many close-up photos of the quilts as I love to see if any fabrics that are in my stash are in the quilts in the book. With a 40 some year collection of my fabric stash, this is very interesting to me. I am happy to have gotten this book.

The Scrappiest Of Them All!
Bonnie Hunter's new book Addicted To Scraps exemplifies scrap quilts to the nth degree: wildly colorful, gazillions of pieces, and yet remarkably controlled. Hunter also introduces her new Fast2Cut Essential Triangle Tool. Don't worry, it's not required. In fact, the most ostentatiously scrappy "Wild & Goosey" (74.5"×83.5") uses paper piecing to connect nearly 6,500 scraps to create Flying Geese units.Hunter organizes the book differently than most. Text instructions are separated from their helpful pictorial illustrations. You'll find yourself flipping pages frequently for some of the more involved quilts. One example is the quilt on the book's cover. "Idaho Square Dance" (73"×73") combines 2 distinct blocks with "Piano Key" border.Speaking of borders, nearly every quilt is surrounded by a lovely pieced border. Some are as complex as the center itself. Hunter further shows off her vivid imagination and design sense by suggesting you continue the scrappiness onto a pieced backing. I nearly choked on my lactose-free latte when I saw her example. Her intricate backings would require immaculate alignment, not to mention more work, that is beyond my attention span. And yes, there is the occasional partial seam. The positively tropical "Mai Tais in Paradise" (55"×65.5") uses them in its seemingly intoxicated Card Trick block variation. As for skill level, I have to say Addicted to Scraps might require more accuracy - both in piecing blocks and joining rows - than a beginner might feel comfortable with. But, hey, quilting is for everybody of all abilities, really. Mistakes and mismatched seams are how we learn to do better. Bonnie Hunter's quilts remind me of pre-1920s quilts when every shirt, curtain, and rag ended up blended into utilitarian bed covers. With lots of pieces. A LOT. You might need to make more friends who happen to share your hobby.

Beautiful, Scrappy Quilts
Ah, if only I were younger or had discovered Bonnie Hunter's system for cutting scraps years ago! The ideas she presents are great. I just can't see me being able to live long enough to make these lovelies and finish my current UFOs! If I were even a little younger, I would use her methods AND I would purchase the book rather than read it on my kindle. This isn't really a book for making a quilt, although you could do that. Instead, you would use this book to shape your method of quilting. It seems like it would be an awful lot of fun!

A Must-Have!
Loved everything about this book...it’s Bonnie Hunter, what’s not to like?! Yes, her quilts do have a million little scraps that are used...but it also gets rid of lots of scraps that multiply in my sewing room! Can’t wait until I retire in 3-1/2 years (who’s counting?!) so that I have enough time in my days to not only make quilts from her books - 2 so far! - but also get the Annual Black Friday Mystery Quilt done by the following year (the last two, done)! I digress, get the book, you’re gonna love it!
