Yes, it comes with one book -- Whack-a-Doodle-Doo. The information is in the "Product Details" section which you probably can't see if you are using a "smart device" to shop. Q: Can you play this set like the traditional boomwhackers or do they have to be played as a xylophone?

That is actually just the carrying case for the boomwhackers and sticks. Which if you tried to play while in it, takes away from the traditional boomwhacker sound. It is just elastic bands holding them in place till you remove them and play them traditionally.

Q: are these tubes connected to each other?

The tubes are not connected but you can use the XyloTote tube holder to connect them. Look for item number B0015B459A on Amazon.

Q: What are the dimensions of this item? How well will it pack for a Christmas trip home?

you could keep them in the box for traveling home or put them in the xylotote that comes with the pack--weighs around 2-3 pounds, very light--dimensions are around 27 by 8 by 5 ish -hope this helps
