I purchased the API Chem Stars to use as the middle media for my ﹰFilstar ﹰL filter. I have a yellow bellied slider turtle that can dirty a tank quite quickly and was told that the Bio-chem stars will help support the eco system in the tank. The 20 stars contained in the package filled about 1/2-3/4 of my media basket. I'm sure another package would fit. Due to the size of my turtle, only 20-25 stars are recommended. When cleaning the filter, you need to make sure you don't rinse out the basket with the chem stars because it will wash away all of the helpful bacteria. I've had the stars for a little over a month now and was expecting some sort of growth on them, but they are as clean as the day I put them in my filter. The stars are a good price for the amount you get and they will last for many months. I would definitely recommend this product and will purchase them again when they need to be replaced.

I purchased a "FilStar XP3 Canister Power Filter" 2007 and I love it so much I bought another one! I have had a chance to see what these "BIO-CHEM STARS" really do for aquarium water balance! The colonies of beneficial bacteria are so robust in these BCSTARs that I was able to get a new 29 gal tank setup (using the 2yr old Filter's dirty media) through the normal clear-cloudy-clear water balancing phase (without water treatments) in just 5 days (normally it takes me 2 weeks!)! At first I was not sure of what filter media products to use with it because it is so versatile and there were so many choices (so I bought a few each and experimented). The FilStar system really does provide filter media for whatever water conditions you will encounter in you area!

I tend to research the crap out of things but I hadn't looked too much into how often I should change the bacteria medium. I had the same medium (these stars) since the start of my external filter about a year ago. I changed all of them out and jump-started the tank with some bacteria and, my gosh, the water clarity has been phenomenal. I am actually shocked at how much of a difference there has been. Just ordered another pack to keep on hand. It won't be another year before I switch out again.
