For the money, this watch checks a lot of boxes.
I bought this watch as a replacement for the Citizen Garrison that was my field watch that recently bought the farm. I didn't want to spend much more than $300 because I am planning on beating the hell out of the watch. But, I still want something that is going to look good, be accurate, water resistant to at least 100m, have an integrated compass, and is durable. I saw this watch and decided to give it a try. I have a Seiko Alpinist that is probably my favorite watch. But it's too well polished and has a leather strap that make it poorly suited to the rigors that I am likely to put this watch through. But, I am familiar with the reliability that Seiko automatic movements offer, and the 4R35 that is housed in this Tortoise is a workhorse (the dive watches of this shape are referred to as turtles. This is a land use watch, hence the name "tortoise"). This watch has an acceptable accuracy of only being about 3 seconds fast per day (I compare it to the atomic clock). Mind you, this is a mechanical watch. If higher accuracy is your expectation, and look for watch with a quartz movement. The strap is not terribly comfortable. But, as any vet or boy scout can tell you, it's probably like any new pair of hiking/combat boots. It may cause blisters and be uncomfortable at first, then become more comfortable with wear. I will give it two weeks. If the strap has not broken in, I will replace it with an aftermarket strap. But, what really sold me on the watch is the comfort of the case. The turtle watches are contoured on the back and feature an offset crown that allow for a full range of motion of the wrist and you will not have a crown that digs into your hand. I was not considering that when I initially purchases this watch. But once it was on my wrist, it was immediately noticeable. That degree of comfort in conjunction with its accuracy and good looks has made this my daily driver, and at about $300, this watch is a steal. I might get one for my dad for Christmas.

Spectacular!!!
Amazing watch....beautiful....beautifully finished ...42.5 mm width wears far smaller than i expected...wonderful that any size wrist can wear this...the turtle or pillow case and the very short lug to lug allows for an extremely comfortable watch...thank you so much!

Wears small and light UPDATED
Updated review (January 2024):My review is below, but to add some things I've noticed over the last year I've owned it: the lume is very good for a watch this price. I am able to see the time even at 3 am if the room is dark. My other watches, not so much. The band HAS gotten better and I haven't replaced it yet.But I'm still hesitant to give it five stars. The main reason is the crown is too easily cross threaded. It's like the stem is loose, or the case hole is out of tolerance. Hopefully it isn't because it's missing an o-ring. Not sure what's up with that. Another reason is it does add time more than any of my watches. Both problems above are surprising to me because otherwise the movement is quiet and seems high quality.Original review (January 2023):It's a surprisingly small watch (or smaller than I thought) or it wears small because of the design. Compared to my Seiko solar or my Orient diver it's also extremely light, which I appreciate and makes it a great hiking watch. The watch band is often beaten up in reviews and for good reason. I'd give this 5 stars in comfort because of the weight except the band is pretty bad. It's stiff and a bit scratchy, but is getting better over time. The only reason I don't change it out for a NATO strap is it IS a good looking band. Once it wears out, which will be soon enough I'm guessing, I'll make the change. It's an attractive watch, but I would go with higher contrasting colors. In dim light it's hard to read with the green on greenish cream. The "tortoise" design case is very cool and reminiscent of the 60s vintage watches I have.Keeps good time, though not quite as good as my Orient automatic.I would have given it 5 stars if the band wasn't so bad and it kept slightly better time.At full price these things are north of $500; I would not pay that. But for ~$300 it's a good deal. It's a quality watch for hunting and hiking.

Nice looking watch
Sharp looking. The band is a little stiff but just give it some time to break in and form to your wrist and it’s fine. The band looks really good on this watch so take the time and let it break in. Another winner from Seiko.

minor scratches
Just received the watch about 20 minutes. The box it came was broken and was not packed in a secure box. It came in with a bag. Also, the box is not original because the top and bottom don't fit. Moreover to the watch, everything looks fine except the back has a few scratches. Not major but enough to notice. The seller does not mention any of these in the description. I wish they did so I know what I am getting. I have to think to see if I want to return it.

Item arrived not working
I ordered the watch from Amazon.com (I live in the UK) and it arrived on time. As expected with an automatic watch, it needed to be wound to get working. I wound it a few times, as per he official Seiko use manual and it did not work. I also did swing it from side to side (as per user manual) to get it working, but still no joy. I would have expected an expensive branded watch to be QC checked before sending it to the customer, that too overseas.
