From the product specs, these appear to be either 405 or 395 nm LEDs (they claim "400 +/- 5 nm"). 400 nanometers is in the "near ultraviolet" part of the spectrum and is still somewhat visible to the human eye; it'll appear a weird sort of purplish-whitish when turned on.Second, I have confirmed that the LEDs are working the ultraviolet by these methods. I disassembled the flashlight and unsoldered two of the nine LEDs. I then put one of these onto a circuit board and measured the voltage across it (stupid electronics fact: LEDs both emit and detect light). There is no voltage measured when regular white LED flashlight is shined on it, or household ambient light. But I do see voltage across it when shining the re-assembled flashlight (with the other 7 LEDs in it) as well as sunlight, which contains a notable UV-A component.Therefore I conclude that the LEDs emit around 400nm as advertised (because the detection spectra of a LED is approximately the same as its emit spectrum).Third, Note that the clear plastic on the front of the flashlight does not seem to have any impact whatsoever.I hope this analysis helps. I bought this flashlight at my local Wal-Mart store for two purposes; one to experiment with UV-LEDs (which I cannot find at my local electronics store) and also to detect puppy pee. **Q: Can a different type of battery be used? There are 395-400nm emitted from this which should be enough to cure Gel polish within 1-2min, but this didn't ever fully cure the nails (regardless of curing time of 3min or 5min). Since this isn't a Gel polish lamp, I am not that surprised or angry.
