Happened again. I doubted another failed thermistor, so I took things apart and carefully cleaned the ducts and thermistor. Seemed OK again. After another failure, I studied the design of the dryer circuitry and concluded that this control board was likely the culprit. I replaced this board and all has been well for a year or so. I think the board was always bad, because the dryer does a better job drying clothes without overheating them (something we had noticed before).
