Swan Song Series

Her most impressive release.
I own everything Tanya has released, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians. Swan Song Series contains more great songs than any other release of which she's been a part. Incredibly solid and immensely listenable.

Excellent Series
I have been listening to Tanya since Throwing Muses and Belly days. This Swan Song Series is quite remarkable. It's unfortunate she doesn't get the radio air play she deserves. The most underrated musician of all time.

Cohesive collection of collaborations
Excellent collection of collaborations sounding generally cohesive. There are a couple of songs that stray from Tanya's recognized style but each of these three albums are surprisingly strong.

A Win Win
In listening to all 3 discs in a row, the cohesiveness shows through despite the songs being built between Tanya and her different collaborators. You can hear Tanya's strong influence in them all. But there's more variety in instrumentation than anything I've heard by her before. I just love it. I've only had the 3 disc version (originally downloaded the individual parts to the series as they came out - got some bonuses having done that too - such as demo's for Belly's "Star" LP) for 4 days and they've stayed in my stereo on heavy rotation since getting them. There are many styles here to be listened to. Tanya's voice never sounded better. The collaborators are top notch. It's a win win for past fans and new ones just coming aboard.

Farewell?....hopefully not
Tanya Donelly has had a remarkable career starting with The Throwing Muses through to The Breeders to Belly and finally her own solo career. This 3 CD set includes 31songs which were (mostly) released as separate digital downloads over 5 EPs so it's nice to get them all in one handy physical package. Not all of the original songs are actually included here as 4 are missing but they can be downloaded for free from her own web page. You also get some bonus tracks not on the original series so overall excellent value for money. The music and obviously the vocals are of course lovely, as you'd expect from Tanya, and she covers many different styles (sometimes not quite working) over the 3 CDs. Although a couple of the best tracks are on CDs 1 & 2 namely 'Christopher Street' with her best vocal and nice harmonies and 'Salt' with another beautiful vocal backed with lovely strings, i actually preferred CD3 as it was more consistent & varied including a couple of the rockiest tracks 'Tu Y Yo' (could have been Throwing Muses) and 'Storm Blown Bird' plus a couple of the more catchier tracks ''Lucky Love' and 'Oh me of little Faith'.On CD2 she includes a couple of synth based tracks 'VivaKaraoke' (with an unusual vocal) and 'Flying at Night' which are the styles i liked least and in my opinion don't suit her voice but kudos for the experimentation. My one gripe would be the lack of info included with/on the digipack as it would have been nice to have had some lyrics and details of who played what etc but this info is also available from her web page.Overall a lovely package and if you like Tanya's music this is a must buy.8 out of 10

A songwriting masterclass - her best work to date.
This collection, featuring 31 new original tracks, all co-written by the ex Throwing Muses and Belly songwriter, together with a number of other musicians and writers, is a terrific achievement. Though I’ve been a fan of Tanya’s work since the Throwing Muses days, I was stunned by the sheer depth and variety of the material here; her pop sensibilities as showcased in the Belly years are still very much in evidence, however there is a maturity to the lyrics, singing and playing that takes these songs to another level. And there are so many of them! Listening through the tracks, I kept hearing tunes that I thought must be ‘the stand out track’ only to find that the next one was just as good. Tanya’s voice is sounding better than ever, too, expressing a whole range of emotions, from the pure pop of Lucky Love to the gorgeous fragility of The End of the Dawn. More of the same please, Tanya – don’t let this be your Swan Song…

Can only hope the title is misleading as this is an unexpected delight. I'd assumed that Tanya had simply run out of ideas somewhere around 2006 (based on nothing, as she's never been less than inspirational), so was quietly astounded when I realised halfway through Disc 1 that this is some of her best stuff ever. And it just keeps going -- almost three hours of consistently excellent material. Wonderful. Please do a Sinatra, Tanya, and make this the first of a dozen comebacks.

Don't argue: Buy it.
I have no time for artists who are past their prime putting out large offerings designed to pursuade us to cough up the cash. So amazed to find all three CDs stuffed full of great songs performed well. When's the next one and a tour coming Tanya?
