excellent medium-tooth heavyweight
Quality-wise, Canson's C à Grain (aka: Canson 1557 Drawing) is one grade above the Strathmore 400 series and two grades above Canson's Classic Cream. Unlike the Classic Cream, the C à Grain truly possesses a medium tooth. It is much sturdier (111 lb./180 gsm) and is ideal for pencil, ink, and colored pencil. I've also experimented with colored pencils on the Stonehenge paper pads which have a light-tooth, or vellum-like surface, but found it completely lacking in its ability to handle multiple layers of color. This C à Grain fully allows for colored pencil layering techniques and is better suited for blending colors.I can best describe the color of this paper as being natural white. The texture is truly a delight and seems to improve the overall appearance of my drawings. I can't think of anything not to like about this pad. While it's a bit more expensive than the others I've mentioned (aside from Stonehenge), it's well worth the extra money.

I really enjoy drawing on this.
I just used this for the first time, (graphite and Conte crayon), and am very impressed with it, mainly because it takes multiple erasures without damage to the paper, and unnoticeable ghosting or indentations. I'm switching to all Canson from now on.

A versatile paper
I bought this to use with coloured pencils, for which it works well for some brands. Polychromos, Pablo, Prismacolor and Luminance work well on it, but I found that Holbein and the Derwent ranges didn't layer well due to wax build up (which I would expect from Derwent, but not Holbein).Pencil, charcoal, carbon pencils all work well, and look good with the textured surface. The back is quite smooth and takes most drawing inks well (not Higgins, which bleeds a bit).Overall, a nice paper to use with suitable materials.

Great quality
I bought this Drawing Paper Pad a few months ago and it performed very well for my type of work; I draw and illustrate wildlife. I use graphite and lightfast oil pencils which gave me pleasing results. Unfortunately I went to purchase another of the same but Amazon states that it is currently unavailable.

I’ve started to do a portrait on this paper (graphite) I’m not sure I like it for that. I do like how the paper feels and think that coloured pencils might work better but that’ll be my next project.
