The New Portuguese Table: Exciting Flavors from Europe's Western Coast: A Cookbook

One of the best...
This is a great cookbook, for several reasons. First, the recipes here actually work, most of them producing unique and fantastic results. I know this is true because I wasn't exactly the most experienced cook when I started using this book, and yet from the beginning I've had successful and great-tasting results with these recipes. Also, the author has a very unique and refreshing outlook on cooking and on Portuguese cuisine - this book contains recipes for many classic Portuguese dishes, but often with a modern twist. The author isn't afraid to experiment, and most of the recipes here are accessible to American cooks. In fact, I was able to get most of the ingredients required here, and was able to substitute the ones I couldn't get. (With the exception of Chouriço and Spanish Chorizo, which are annoyingly hard to find in Denver). Many of the recipes are tweaked from the traditional Portuguese versions, but in such a way as to optimize taste and flavor with ingredients that may be more readily available on hand.My favorite recipes here are Milk Mayonnaise (it's fantastic, the only catch is you have to buy a hand blender), Steak on Horseback, Baby Octopus and Potato Salad, and Cilantro Bread Soup.I'm not sure why Portuguese cuisine hasn't received more attention, since it is absolutely amazing. Hopefully this book will help give it the attention it deserves. David Leite is a truly unique and talented chef and food writer, and I can't wait till he comes out with a new cookbook.UPDATE: this book is even better than I originally thought, I wish I could give it ten stars. I have, since the original review, made many more of the recipes (including the Curried Mussels and the Kale and Chorizo Stew for my husband) and they have all consistently come out fantastic. I own about ten cookbooks that I love and use a lot but I think this is probably the one that's most heavily used - almost every other recipe in it is marked with a pink sticky, which is how I designate my favorite recipes.

Innovative look at traditional recipes
I purchased four books for Christmas gifts, including one for myself. Interesting enough, the book was on some of my intended receivers' wish list. The book is a very well done approach at Portuguese recipes, using either the traditional or more modern ingredients available in the U.S.. The photographs are excellent, as are descriptions. I was particularly interested in the recipes from S. Miguel, Azores, since I am from there. I was not disappointed. When I received the book, I could not put it down. David's descriptions are on the mark and his experiences with the locals, typical. There are several mistakes in the descriptions and spelling, that I am sure will be corrected on subsequent printings. As a result of reliving some of my culinary childhood tastes and smells, my wife and I, as well as several friends, are now considering doing a culinary tour of Portugal. The New Portuguese Table, is certain to become a reference for Portuguese cuisine. Congratulations on a job well done. And now, I am going to make some Pasteis de Nata.

Easy and the real Deal
Having lived in Portugal for a couple of years, there are some foods that I have come to love and miss. So when we decided to have a Portuguese Dinner Night at home, which is pot luck. Knowing that some of the contributors not having spent anytime in Portugal found it extremely helpful. I was very impressed with their outcome. The book is recipes that are authentic and easy to follow. Yo muito gusto !

Portuguese cooking from a different point of view....
Having lived in Brazil for five years and one of several who think that Brazilian food is the best in the world, I was eager to find a cook book that would bring together the cuisine from Brazil's homeland. I was very pleased to find this cook book that adds a modern take to the standard Portuguese fare. The New Portuguese Table cookbook is excellent. It is written from a point of view of a son of a Portuguese couple that was born in the US and returned to Portugal to find emerging newer versions of the standard Portuguese cuisine. It covers not only the food, but wine of this fine country (and its islands) blended with the cultural settings. The soups are excellent and am looking forward to trying all the meat/seafood dishes included herein. This is a keeper!!

not what i expected
There are some good recipes in here but it's not I was expecting. I spent a few weeks with my husband's family in Portugal and I wanted a cookbook that had their everyday recipes, this does not. This is more of what you would find at a restaurant, not in a portuguese home

Exactly what I'd hoped for!
Wonderfully appetizing pictures of dishes accommoded by recipes that clearly explain their history and how to make them. So many choices from appetizers to dessert it is very hard to choose which to start with.
