Films of Twentieth Century Fox

This superb book gives a brief history of William Fox and his climb from a $25 a week coat liner in 1900 to be head of a movie empire worth millions of dollars. The company produced some great films from 1935 onward but for me their golden era was the 1950s when Fox gave us CinemaScope and stereophonic sound in 1953. This began with 'The Robe' and continued on 'Broken Lance', 'Demetrius and the Gladiators', 'The River of No Return', 'Three Coins in a Fountain' and many more. The one thing that always stood at for me during this era was not only the visual spectacle but the magnificent sound. You could, and still can, recognise that Fox sound. Just listen to 'Star Wars'!All the movies from 1935 to 1979 are catalogued, each receiving a thumbnail sketch of the plot, stars, directors etc. Towards the end of the 1970s Fox were not producing many notable films until 'Star Wars' and 'Alien' came along that things did pick up. True there are 40 years of filming making to be accounted for upon till the present day but this volume is complete in itself.On a personal note, most of the major films from the 1950s are available on DVD save one glaring omission, that is 'Seven Cities of Gold'. I wait with baited breathe for its release at some future date.Finally as I began to write this, news came through that Disney intend to drop the name Fox so the company would just be 20th Century. To eliminate the name of a man would did so much for the movie industry would be sacrilege. I'm sure if some company were big enough to buy out Disney, how would they like it if their new owners wished to remove the name Disney from the company? Rant over!A terrific book. Well worth investigating.

great book for the movie. Arrived in good time. Good price and the book itself was exactly as described. Good all around. would recommend.

Von der Bebilderung des Buches hatte ich mir mehr erwartet, im Vergleich zu zu den Zusammenstellungen und Übersichten der anderen Studios, wie Paramount, Warners oder MGM. Hier ist sind es deutlich weniger Bilder. Aber Umfang und Erhaltungszustand des Buches rechtfertigen den Preis.

事情はよく知らないが、１９８０年前後にハリウッドのメイジャー映画会社各社の詳しい作品解説書が刊行されている。以前ユニヴァーサル、パラマウントの本をたまたま手にし、近年ワーナー、ユナイトなどの本を購入した。各作品のデータにスチールがそれぞれ添えられ、資料として貴重な本だと思っていた。　事情はよく知らないが、２０世紀フォックスだけフォーマットが異なるかたちで同時期に刊行されている。内容がよくないという書評もあったが、それを確かめる意味もこめて購入した。　だがこちらが想像した以上にひどかった。以下、その内容のひどさを列挙したい。まず写真が全作品に添えられていない。数えてはいないが、半数以上の映画の写真がないようだ。しかもレイアウトがひどく、同じ見開き内に文字データと写真がない。おそろしく投げやりで雑な感じで、それぞれの年の最後のほうに写真がまとめて載っているページが多い。また普通この種の本は重要な作品にはそれなりの写真のスペースをとるものだが、そうした配慮がほとんど感じられない。重要な映画の写真が小さく載り、大きな白アキが年度の最後のページにあったりする（写真をおおきくすれば白アキをなくせる）。　さらに写真と文字データを照合確認する際に気づいたのだが、校正がきっちりとされておらず、映画の題名のミスが多い。こちらでは定冠詞が抜けていたり、あちらでは感嘆符がなかったりという状態である。　ともかく他の映画会社の本にくらべて出来がよくない。雲泥の差という言葉があるが、私が持っていたこの種の本のなかで、ものすごくちゃんと作られている本があり、こんな機会に飽きずにページをめくらずにいられなかった。Ronald Haverの『David O. Selznick’s Hollywood』という本である。この本ではセルズニックが製作した映画（私のお気に入りは『白昼の決闘』）がスチールではなくフィルムからとられた画面そのままで（もちろんカラー映画はカラー図版）大量に載っている。驚くばかりの美しさ、凄さである。この本に比較したら、本書には最低点をつけるほかない。
