Conga and Bongo Drum in Jazz

Important and much-needed contribution to the world of jazz percussion literature!
"The Conga and Bongo Drum in Jazz" is an indespensible resource for truly understanding the vital role of these hand drums in the development and expression of Jazz music. Offering unique insights into decades of collaborations between Latin percussionists and Jazz musicians, this book wonderfully documents musical developments and evolutions such as rhythmic interplay, time feel, and composition that resulted from the incorporation of the Cuban conga and bongó into North American Jazz. The discography alone is worth the price of admission! Well done Trevor and Bobby!

Hits the Sweet Spot
This book hit the sweet spot for me - I have been looking for info on playing congas and bongo in a classic jazz setting. The many included patterns increased the variety of my playing, and resulted in many compliments from band mates.

Generally not great quality and dubious usefulness
Beware! Those seeking to buy a book that will unlock the secrets of conga- and bongo-playing to allow to hold your own in a jazz combo or band will be severely disappointed!!I have respect for the main author, Trevor Salloum, and so should you if you know his playing (Google him and you find some skilful and inventive stuff: the man has great talent, no question). However this book doesn't cut it in a number of ways:1. The book is marketed as uniquely addressing jazz conga/bongo playing. This is not true. For example, Richie Gajate Garcia's or Michael Spiro do cover jazz playing (as well as traditional rhythms).2. Whilst it is true that there is a discography of jazz conga/bongo music, the book only covers swing. There are many other types of jazz around and swing is one of the easiest rhythms to pick up. Many of the albums or pieces listed display more or less exactly the same type of playing so although the list is quite useful swing history buffs (for which there are better books on Latin Jazz), as a conga or bong player, one is not going to benefit any more from a massive list, than from a couple of examples. Google Irving Soto for some free jazz playing - fantastic skilled stuff buit nowhere in this book. There is merely a small paragraph on improvisation - which is much less instructive than say, Arturo Rodriguez's book "Afro-Cuban Concepts" (applicable to a variety of styles)3. The book has 6 basic swing pattern variations for conga and 6 for bongos - that's 6 pages each. In a book of 90 pages, it's not a lot of nuts and bolts!!4. The book has some basic technical background on conga and bongo set-up but no more than any other standard book, and in many cases quite a bit less. Moreover, the entire book is devoted to swing but the section on music notation does not cover swing!!! This just seems poorly thought out.So, sorry Trevor but this book does not do justice to the title or yourself! I gave it a score of 2 only because I haven't read the bongo section which looks like it could be useful basic instruction on bongo playing. Otherwise I would give it a score of 1. Get it by all means if you can find it second hand on the cheap.Other general comments that may be unfair and reflect my personal bias:Why do these books need 2 pages of endorsements on how great the book is before you even start? Why is there 3 times more info on the editor than on the main author? Why do these books ALWAYS have to have pictures of the authors cosying up to some well-known musician?I just get the impression that whilst the publisher Mel Bay does produce a variety of music books, they seem to be more keen on getting your money than producing quality books!!

Durchschnittliches Lehrbuch
Text in Englisch.
