Great book but insufficient packaging
I was pleased with the quality of the books images. Would have liked to read more specific details of Menzel's techniques if they are known.Disappointed the first book arrived badly damaged. Returned the book and gave feedback about insufficient packaging to protect the book. Second book sent in exactly the same type of packaging. The book was damaged again, although not as bad as the first book. The offered and taken refund still means being out of pocket, that's why I did not return the second damaged book to be further out of pocket...

Do not buy this book based on the cover art.
Personally, I did not find this book particularly inspiring. I am a realist artist, primarily figurative, and I was looking for a good reference to add to my library. His drawing style is beautiful, interesting how he uses the stump, but overall there weren't enough nuggets like that to get me going. His gouache paintings are lovely, too, but there aren't many in this book. I appreciate the value of this book to reveal and preserve familiarity with this artist, who might otherwise be lost to history. That may be the greatest value here.

Insight into the life and world of this amazing artist is accompanied by his works of art. I learn so much every time I look through this book.

Reviews of the book fell short; the book is ok from an art history perspective but to add to your collection for inspiration and to improve your craft not so much-a good book to check out at the library not to buy.

An interesting look at an artist I was unfamiliar with
'Drawings and Paintings' by Adolph Menzel is a collection of the artists works from 19th century Germany. There are 98 black and white images and 32 color plates. The book begins with three essays about Adolph Menzel, his studio, and notes about the drawings at a museum in Berlin. Menzel was always drawing. He also caught many of his sketches in more natural poses, sometimes while the subject was unaware. He seemed to be a bit of an eccentric. Subjects invited to his studio had to enter by a back entrance. The studio itself had art hung on the walls which Menzel referenced. Models waiting on the stairs would inscribe their names on the wall. The art inlcuded in the book varies from completed work to sketches and ideas. His style seems to have been ahead of its time.I appreciated getting to view this book. I wasn't familiar with this artist and many of the works in this book haven't been seen outside of Germany. I liked the essays and the selection of art.I received a review copy of this ebook from Dover Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest reivew. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

I have not known of Adolph Menzel and was delighted to get introduced to this artist
I received an e-copy of the book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I'm a self-taught artist, as well as a passionate student of art history, and discovering previously unknown (to me) artists always inspires me. I have not known of Adolph Menzel and was delighted to get introduced to this artist. As with all Dover books, there's a great combination of information about the artist and his works. I find is drawings and watercolors particularly interesting and something to study further. Thank you for the opportunity to review this title.

Adolph Menzel: Drawings and Paintings.
This is a very useful addition to the pitifully small number of English-language publications available on Menzel.I discovered Menzel for myself through a book of drawings I found in the GSA library when I was a student; the book (German text) hadn't been taken out for ten years and had been professionally re-bound – I think it dated from the 1960s or 70s – it was in beautiful condition and clearly hadn`t been perused much. No-one I spoke to had heard of the artist with the exception of an American student I met in my last year. This paperback volume from Dover is pretty much what I expected from them; there is a brief – but informative – introduction to the artist and his oeuvre with the bulk of the book taken up with the illustrations; these are quite good on the whole, mainly drawings (he was a hugely prolific and formidable draughtsman) and with a few colour illustrations (several gouaches); the reproduction quality is fine and the selection reflects the diversity of his work. The drawings I first discovered were of industrial scenes, suits of armour and brilliantly executed portraits; there are some good examples here, and most of these are not available in any other books I've seen. The only other recommendable book on Menzel is Adolph Menzel, 1815-1905: Between Romanticism and Impressionism which is currently only available at ridiculous prices, but is the best reference you are likely to find aside from some German-language books. This is also quite reasonably priced, so if you've yet to discover Menzel, this is a good place to start.A worthwhile addition to your art library. A good selection of Menzel's work
A good selection of Menzel's work, concentrating on drawings that have not been printed already in other books. The introductory text is excellent. The reproductions are as good as can be expected in an affordable book. This is the best introduction to Menzel, and well worth buying even if you already know his work.
