Once the popcorn starts popping, this rotating wire keeps the cooked popcorn moving, and therefore not burning, while not moving the uncooked kernels below. **Q: Are the gears plastic or metal?** A: I purchased this one from a store a few years ago, the plastic gears melted. So frustrating that some seem to have plastic some metal gears?? **Q: Can you make caramel popcorn with this one?
