I have a section that is just a hair wider than 5 inches. will this fit or does it have to be 5 1/4 inches wide?

The external dimensions are 9 X 7. Yo need this much space for this to fit.

I want to use this on small storage unit that has generator in it. Can I just install with screws? I want to run power cord through it.

it is designed to install between the two studs in a wall. I am not sure your storage unit would work but there is room enough to drill holes in the frame around the opening. I not certain the item would work for you but this is the best info i can give.
