There's no "end" to the ribbon, it is a continuous loop so there is no set number of punches. It is subjective and up to you when it is too light and needs to be replaced. That said I would expect a few thousand punches out of a ribbon is reasonable.

It will print on a plastic bag, but the ink is very light on plastic. The cartridge is made for a time clock so I'm not sure why printing on plastic would be required.
