Worth the extra cost
This scoop is just the right size and length for handling hot coals and cleaning out my wood stove. I looked at two local alternatives that were half the cost but in both cases I could easily bend the handle with my hands. This is much stiffer and the galvanized finish means there is no paint to burn off. Highly recommended.update, 3/15/2017After nearly three years of use, I have tossed out all my previous fireplace tools, and use this exclusively for my wood stove. It has stood up to all my abuse. I agree with the reviewer who would like Behrens to offer a companion with holes in it to make it easier to separate the hot coals from the ashes. For those reviewers who wish the handle was longer, I strongly suggest you buy a pair of welders gloves and keep them by the stove. Much safer when working around that kind of heat. And to "the most popular negative review" all I can say is shame on Amazon. The reviewer is very obviously not talking about this product, which should be obvious to anyone who compares the review to the photo and description.

Coal Hod
Ok - if you've found this product - you know exactly what you're looking for and this will likely fit the bill.A neighboring farmer had many of these when I was a kid in the late 1970s.At one time, they were in every flea market I visited. But like so many treasures of my youth - the heavy galvanized pails with the unique shape had disappeared while I was busy in suburbia. After years of complaints from my wife about using "ugly" Spackle pails (white plastic 5 gallon pails) I recalled the Hod and found it quickly on Amazon. This one is thinner than the Hods of my youth - but it's perfect and works as intended (no moving parts - so it isn't really that difficult to meet my expectations on this item.)More importantly - we have returned to marital bliss as the "ugly" Spackle pails remain in the garage while the new Hod has the spotlight on the fireplace hearth. It's also great for ashes and starter twigs. If you need something like this just order it... you won't be upset.

Extremely well made and does the job nicely
This is a very well made and sturdy fireplace shovel. I heat with wood so I am using this every day. I need a shovel that is sturdy enough to hold up to a lot of use and this one does the job. But then it IS a Behrens, and they make good stuff. Very happy with this shovel. (oh, and the first one that showed up had a lot of scrapes on it because Amazon put a metal dustpan and a metal shovel in a biiiiig box with no packing materials at all, so the dustpan beat the crap out of the shovel. The seller replaced the beat up shovel with a nice new not-beatup one right away so that was great.) I'm very happy with my shovel :o)

Good Quality Except Zinc Is Thin
I like this shovel, which I use for removing ashes from my woodstove. It functions very well, and I expect it to last a lifetime. BUT it is zinc plated, thinly, and NOT galvanized. As I said, I like it, it is durable, the zinc will no doubt help reduce corrosion, but because the zinc is so thin, it will not provide the abrasion resistance it needs for its intended use. I am keeping it, and will use it, but I deducted a star for my mild dissatisfaction. As always YMMV

Handle tip
This is much larger and sturdier than those decorative fireplace ash shovels. I needed it to scoop out hot coals from my earth oven - an outdoor Adobe pizza/bread oven. For those asking about adding a longer handle, I intended to get a wood dowel that would fit but I looked around my studio and spotted a scrap of 1/2" metal electrical conduit about 2 and a half feet long that I saved because I save stuff. A little tapping of a hammer and it's in so tight I don't even need to add a screw.

Good but...
I thought this shovel would be great for our PK Grill BBQ to shovel the ash and I could reclaim my handy garden trowel from my grill master boyfriend. The handle is too long for this purpose but probably OK for shoveling coal into a furnace.

Not Just for Ash & Coal!
I LOVE this steel shovel! I don't use it for coal, though. I use it for scooping up really wet macaw sh*t in combination with a 6" steel drywall knife that I use for scraping the bird poop up with up. I used to use a 2nd 6" dry wall taping knife as the poop scooper, but some of the wet sh*t just kept falling off the sides. I needed something with turned up sides to keep it in, and this works perfect! Problem solved. This shouldn't rust either and it is really well made and sturdy. I'm a happy camper.

great!
Bought this to clean the ashes out of my wood stove. Works excellently! the price is good. If you are going to try and dig a hole in the ground with it you will be severely disappointed, but if that is the case then get the right tool for the job. If used properly it works great! would buy another one.

Great ash shovel
It was the only $7 option for an ash shovel for my fireplace. Works well, and hangs to the accessory rack I already have. One star off:I wish a black coloured option available.

Behrens Quality
This is the third Behrens product that I have purchased. It's nice to know, that in an era of shoddy quality, Behrens manufactures a good product.
