Q: How many of these candles would I need for a backyard gathering (around 20 people)?

I use 2 on a 8' x 16' porch and they ar very effective. Having a roof helps keep the citronella scent prominent.

Q: how long do they last

Quite a long time - I used mine daily for a couple hours each day. Don't remember exactly but guessing 3 weeks to a month. Not sure how long it will burn continuously.

Q: Do you place these on tables by you // or far away ??

I usually place them under a table or on the floor, but a bit far away so that I'm. Not inhaling the fumes directly. It doesn't smell bad, but it's not something I want right near me. Works just fine!
