Something is wrong in the perfect domed city of Romdo. Between the sudden rash of murders and a virus affecting all AutoReivs-cyborg companions and workers who assist the people of Romdo-all is not right in their dome home. Detective Re-l Meyer begins to investigate, seeking answers to the weird occurrences that are happening more and more around her. But when she begins to uncover the truth, her world is turned upside down. First, the strange immigrant Vincent Law goes missing and then a monster appears before her, shaking her to her core. But this monster is something more, something dangerous and sinister. With each question and mystery, she is led back to the creature. But what is it really? What purpose does it serve? A sign of the end or a sign of a new beginning? Whatever it is, it repeatedly brings her back to Vincent and soon, alongside his journey back to another dome world called, Mosk. As they make their way across scarred and deserted Earth, Re-l and Vincent will learn more about the monster and the "awakening"-which could be more of an ending than a beginning.

Arguably the best Psychological Anime
Instead of doing an in-depth review and analysis of the entire series, I feel it is best that that be left up to the viewer. Upon completion of this series, some research will be required to fully understand the complexity of the entire story so that everything comes together logically. For me personally, that is one element of enjoyment in any piece of media, but especially this one. With that said, this Anime is definitely not for everyone. It requires a lot of attentiveness to pickup on the philosophical, mythological, and even nihilistic themes covered throughout the majority of the series. Some of these are obvious at times, while others are more thoroughly hidden throughout. But, if any of these topics interest you, you have stumbled upon one of the best Animes ever contrived along with some very memorable and interesting characters.Of course I must also mention the exceptional animation and post-apocalyptic environments that give off an eerie beauty to the world of Ergo Proxy which are unique to this show.Along with all of this is a soundtrack (Opus 1 and Opus 2) that is nothing short of perfection and fits the Cyberpunk post-apocalyptic theme of the show seamlessly (thank you Ike Yoshihiro). I also have to mention the Opening and Outro, which both musically and visually leave you with anemoia for this show once finished. Monoral and Radiohead really do translate this shows aesthetic to music. To conclude: if you are even slightly into thought-provoking stories, Ergo Proxy is a must watch. Lastly, this Anime has a fantastic DUB, strongly recommend it over the sub as it adds a lot of personality to each one of the characters.Good luck finding your raison d'etre.

a curious surprise...
By no means would I consider myself an anime buff (I only own a few: Darker Than Black, Wolf's Rain, Sword of the Stranger, Appleseed, Vexille, and now Ergo Proxy), but I was so pleasantly surprised by this collection. I bought it strictly on the synopsis because it seemed different. Since I am always on the look out for a new and interesting piece of anime, I am open to pretty much all sorts. This one, admittedly, caught my eye because of the box art. Yes, I know I am "judging a book by its cover." But honestly, its just a still from a scene in the first episode but it seems to convey alot, just in the cover. So I read the description and thought that it sounded like a break from the typical "here is a hero against insurmountable odds, hoping to prevail in a war they cannot win." This anime is definately told precisely FOR the story. There is some good action sprinkled throughout the adventure, but the collection spends the majority of the time developing the characters and connecting the plots. The amazon description is an accurate synopsis of the show, so I will not regergitate that all over again, suffice to say there is enough going on in the whole series that you almost HAVE to watch it over just to catch all the ideaology and psychology presented. It's a fun show if you're in to thinking about what's going on. Not for those who just want action with no substance behind it. I will definately be watching this series over and over again. I'm sure I will find something new about it each time.

A good shelf edition for people who enjoy a tiny bit of cerebral fun in anime
A true classic. Thought-provoking without being pretentious.A utopian society living in a protective dome on the war-damaged, inclement-weathered Earth. The robotic citizens are beginning to rebel due to a virus giving them self-awareness, and it's up to our protagonist, Re-l Mayer to track down rogue units. Enter Vincent Law, a refugee from another dome who is looking to become a full-fledged citizen in a society that looks down on his people. Add in a dash of god-like monsters who seem both integral to the society's function as well as bent on destroying it, and Re-l Mayer and Vincent Law become irreversibly entwined in the chaos. That's where our story begins. The art is dark and beautifully drawn. The characters are interesting enough, with enough light moments to break up an otherwise sinister plotline. It also does what a lot of good stories do, and it doesn't tell you everything. You tend to forget which parts were fed to you, piece-meal throughout the story, and which parts you filled in with your own imagination. The blu-ray transfer seems great since the anime was already in 16:9 format. I recommend this anime to anyone who... well, anyone.

Ergo Proxy is definitely a great anime series!
This anime series was a pleasant surprise recommendation. The dark art style is incredibly beautiful and the story was very interesting. It is a dark tale of a dystopian world where most humans live in dome cities because the outside world is too polluted for most people to survive. These cities were created by godlike beings called proxies, and each city was created by its own proxy. I would describe more about the story, but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen the series. I strongly recommend Ergo Proxy.

Excellent Quality
The Blu-ray version has great video quality. The dark scenes are actually visible now and I can see details way better now. Only minor negative is that it doesn’t have English subtitles for the dub and I use subtitles for everything.

One of my favorite shows!
The show is a hidden gem and a personal favorite of mine! This is a great release for any fan.My only gripe with all the DVD/Blu-Ray versions of Ergo Proxy is that the included English subtitles don't match the English audio track, and there is no option for closed captions.

The anime science fiction classic returns in HD!
Ergo Proxy is a 2006 science fiction anime. This year marks the show's 10th anniversary and the first time it is available on blu ray in North America. The show is highly respected among the anime community, and in my personal opinion, this coming from a person enjoying the anime genre since the late 90s, is one of the best science fiction stories that anime has to offer. Ergo Proxy has strong re-playability, you will most likely only get 50% of the overall plot on your first watching - the show is set up in a way that more things make sense on each consecutive re-watch. I highly recommend watching it twice, and only after the second time googling plot details to fill in the gaps. It is an amazing story when you put all the pieces together. This anime holds up very well, in other words, it stood the test of time. The dark and gray futuristic dystopian setting was animated using a unique art style that looks fantastic even a decade later. The show is mainly animated with an average budged, however it looks good thanks to its consistent style. The anime also contains a few highly action packed episodes or particular sequences that have superb fluid animation on par with modern anime. But be warned, Ergo Proxy is not an action show, it is a philosophical science fiction story that examines the fall of a society and ethical choices surrounding life and technology. It is a highly recommended anime, or rather, a highly recommended series to watch (anime fan or not, it's good for anyone, really). The cleaned up blu ray quality makes the unique art direction stand out, the dub cast is strong, and the music fits the atmosphere of this world. Ergo Proxy is definitely a show for a more mature audience, it requires thought and patience - this isn't a shonen series that survives on action, it is a show meant to immerse you in its setting and understand what its characters are going through in the desolate world they live in. If you are an individual that likes science fiction, thought provoking movies/shows, or even simply someone who is seeking a unique experience that's different - then I can't say it enough times to watch this series, it'll be worth it.
