Review: Nice Full Featured Earbuds - So following a thanksgiving eve car break-in I was looking for a replacement for my Bose QC earbuds. I decided I didnt want to pay the premium price for the BOSE I decided to go fishing in the sub $100 waters. The EAH-AZ40-N featured mono playback in either earbud, a rich sound, bluetooth multipoint connection, just my voice for better call clarity, and a $90 price point for the Rose Gold ($20 less than black), as well as a $12 discount coupon. Great price so here we go! 1. Packed in a nice box with assorted ear tips. The color is as shown in the photo. 2. The charging case uses USB-C cables and comes shipped without charge! Interesting concept. Charged pretty quickly on my 65 watt charger. The charging case has a single multicolor led. Page 7 has the decoder key for the colors .. green is good, yellow medium, red is low, cyan (blue) means earphones are being charged. 3. The units come shipped with the medium sized ear tip installed. I was surprised that the XS seemed to fit me best! They ride firmly in my ear and were comfortable. 4. I like the mono earphone mode with either side. I tend to use when I am messing about and want to be able to hear my wife for instructions and questions. 5. Stereo sound is quite nice with good bass. I have not done much testing yet. I am not an audiophile. 6. The Technics Audio Connect application provides setup for the Ambient Sound Feature, Equalizer and other features. It not very sophisticated compared to Bose and Sony apps but it gets the job done on Android. 7. Pairing is achieved by removing both earbuds from the charger and touching the control plate on one of the earbuds for 7 seconds. The little led on the inside earbud begins flashing red/blue. Pairing then proceeds as usual. 8. Multipoint works well. I am sitting here with an android tablet, Samsung s20+ phone, and windows 10 PC. Start sound on one and the earphones connect. Stop Playback and start it on another device and the earphones connect .. So easy. It will not wrestle with sounds from multiple devices, you have to control the playback and the earbuds will get the sound. 9. The charging case does not seem very rugged .. we will see how it holds up. I have ordered a pouch to give it some protection in my man-bag. 10. Phone calls seem to work quite well, limiting the background noise. More testing to come. Ok, too many words. Nicely priced Full Featured Earbuds that sound Great. Happy Day
Review: Subtle style - Technics is always one of my go to brands as they still seem to care about function over fashion for the most part. In this case the look was important as I was looking for something sort of close to my skin tone since where I'm out riding with them it's not wise to flash a lot of fancy gear. They have a metallic shine but disappear at 10 feet and are much less in your face than bright white and are obvious to anyone who does notice they aren't from Apple which lowers their appeal to those with ill intent. Considering the limitation of wireless connection and the size of these buds I'm quite pleased with the sound. The app is easy to get working, it paired up first try and the app operation is quick and reliable. Nothing more frustrating than a mandatory app that wont work. You get 4 ear cups to experiment with and you should try one size either side of what you expect, small was more comfortable for me than extra small which came as a surprise. It takes a bit of practice to learn the tap operation code but I had it down after my first ride.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How do I do the initial setup of the earbuds and connect them to a device?**
A: Once the earbuds are charged, remove from the charging cradle, enable Bluetooth on your device, and select “EAH-AZ40” for pairing. If prompted for a passkey, input “0000” (four zeros). Consult the Operating Instructions for more detail.

**Q: The earbuds are not fitting in my ears properly. How do I get a better fit?**
A: Choose an earpiece size that fits snugly, and twist gently as you insert in your ear for a secure seal. The Technics logo should read straight when they are inserted correctly.

**Q: Can I switch my connection from one Bluetooth Device to another?**
A: Yes! Once you pair your AZ40 earbuds to your devices via Bluetooth (see User Guide) you can connect to your devices through the device settings or through the Technics audio app.

**Q: How do I utilize Touch Controls?**
A: Consult your User Guide for a full key of Touch Controls, including play/pause, voice assistant, receive/reject call, and track forward/back.

**Q: Why does one earbud have better battery life than the other?**
A: The earbud that is removed from the case first starts the Bluetooth pairing process with your devices which may result in a slightly shorter battery life.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Technics: LEGEND
*by M***M on January 5, 2023*

GenZ/Millennials: Technics? What's that? Before GenZ/Millennials: from back in the day. Remember DJs spinning their tunes with turntables? Yeah, they're still around making things - over 40+ yrs now. Kept up with the times. Now we're seeing the return of cassette - wow! The AZ40 is their entry-level tws earbuds. What can we expect? Let's take a closer look. The AZ40 is the youngest sibling in an ever increasing family which now includes: the massive AZ80 at three times the cost (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5N5Y1C4/) and three device connection - true 'multipoint' (Now only about $25 more than now went-up-too-much AZ40 ($125 mid 12/25, https://www.amazon.com/Technics-Bluetooth-Cancelling-Multipoint-Connectivity/dp/B0C5N5KH2M/ $154) and the new AZ100 🤯 running a 10-hr Battery, they finally solved the super poor battery life of the AZ40, I think. Haven't tried it out yet, Technics are you down? I'll even send it back to you. 🙂 Not to be outdone, the AZ40 is undoubtedly still a capable, attractive, and witty baby of the family sporting a very interesting 6mm Dynamic Driver as its main producer with a respectable two device "multipoint". Why do I say interesting? Well, to best put it - you have to listen to it. Sound Bright and clear sound, impressive sound stage, and exquisite instrument separation - the best I've come across ever in an earbud - all from a tiny, tiny, like an AliE $6 impossibly low-cost tws earbud 6mm driver. ($20 UGreen HiTunes v1 actually uses a 6mm driver that's almost as good without a DAC, incredibly on a 6yr old iPhone before updating to the latest iOS for that model, which completely destroyed the sound quality almost as if the original DAC-quality sound was an inadvertent mistake, an unintended quality freebie code playing the best audio that's already built in the hardware, which it probably was) Back to the Technics 6mm what? driver. Smaller than a contact lens. Almost negligible beside these enormous and enormously Common 13mm drivers. Remarkable, as the bass bumps hard for such a small driver, especially when you know how to drive it. The bass aint gonna sound impressive at all straight out. You need to adjust the levels. The mids and highs are unnaturally clean and clear, which is to be expected from Technics. And this is only a traditional magnet DD. There is absolutely no BA in these. I didn't know it was possible to reproduce sound this clear without BAs. Well now we do. This challenges the prevailing thought that to achieve clean response, you'd need a BA, two, three or more. To this day, I don't know how Technics does it. My guess is the premium materials found in the driver including the rare earths. That might be why the sound is so pricey for an earbud and the quality of the case so bad. The AZ40 stays fully true here. It does not screw around and takes its craft seriously. It requires a bit of responsibility. These buds are designed for adults and made for the same. It means when you lift +5db on the preamp, you WILL hear it. It's not messing around. Technics staying faithful to its audiophile heritage is something you have to experience for yourself. If you blast the preamp beyond responsible levels your ears (and possibly the product) will pay for it. That said, when listening responsibly (ack) you will hear all sorts of goodies and hidden gems you never heard before and once again, you gotta hear it to believe it. Reverbs, echoes, sizzles, sparkles, fades, the very character of the sound the artist wanted you to hear. Sound familiar? That was Dre's impetus for creating Beats. I know why that one reviewer stated, "these the best sounding buds in this price range. Period." Playtime Getting back. Really though, they shouldn't make the small guy, the 6mm driver - do all the work. Though as a result, a very respectable 7.5 hrs of playtime is achieved with such a small form factor - one which neither protrudes too much nor is fatiguing in weight. With the appearance of a fashion accessory the AZ40 does not disappoint in performance vs weight or size. If you need a lightweight, small form factor with fantastic sound and looks, this is it. 12/25 Update after nearly two years of moderate to heavy use: The battery capacity has eroded significantly and is nowhere near where it used to be, but it bottoms out at 3-4 hrs at best. Which is quite bad, and has been a point of contention in the reviews with many, with Technics staying silent on this, a stark contrast to Chinese brands who will reach out to you before you click submit on your review and try to make it right. I am seriously tempted to crack the AZ40s open now that the warranty is a faded memory and solder in another set of lithium-ions to double the capacity. If the AZ40s weren't a working museum artifact that still produces good sound I'd for sure get on that stupid tube and find the best way to open these up after closing, opening, muting, then opening and closing then opening the tab to avoid watching that stupid, stupid commercial. I have friends in enterprise IT. It doesn't cost that much to host videos, really. ANC There is absolutely no ANC with this model. It is shrewdly bundled with its middle brother - usually the one with issues - the AZ60, which sports a 8mm driver, true ANC - as in 'active' - at about $80 more. Now, it's nearly the same price. A bit messed up for those who bought the AZ40 like me, but hey, that's what capitalizm and diFFeREntiASian is all about. 🤦🏻‍♂️😡 CONS The sound controls are strange. Volume is controlled by one side, two taps/three taps. Not sure what philosophy was used here. The other thing is the automatic ambient mode when on a call. Do you want to hear everyone around you while you're on a call? It means while you're enjoying your tunes with its passive noise control, when you get on a call you'll hear what's around you amplified. Now I get it, it's great if you're ordering your mocha or latte while on a conference call that you'd otherwise be late for, but in a way, that's all times past. The mode defeats any passive noise cancellation you get from it being in your ears. Nonsensical. Dumb. The plastic that makes up the base feels super cheap. Like toy cheap made from the 80's. Like it will rub off after awhile cheap. It's painted over and not pigmented resin. That's really cheap. You're Technics, how are you gonna do like that to your fans? Sigh. Not a good look for a premium brand. Compare with a premium comparable Anker product you won't see this. But you won't get sound anywhere close to Technics. Clever Panasonic business people, I see what you did there. I get about 6-8 hrs music play time before they go nappy again. And yes the light does change color from red to yellow green to spring green. The led is small ,thin and rectangular just like back in the day for all who remember. Update: about half now, but holding steady. OTHER THOUGHTS Playing music, you have ambient mode or off - Off provides better sound isolation. "Multi-point" works well for two devices. Automatically connects with Apple products if already paired, and does not interfere with other paired devices, a helpful feature. Non-interference is good. Speaking of, bluetooth does cut out noticeably as you walk away from your paired device. Cutting corner #2. The eartips that ship aren't the best by far. May cause some falling out issues. That's not good. Aftermarket ones with a unique silicone or others that fit your ear snugly and comfortably might be best. It will bring out the best sound in your investment. I don't believe the reviews about the bad sound with earbuds at first glance. It is likely "operator error", not a good fit, which will affect sound. Once you find the right tip, you will be brought to new acoustic worlds. Sensitive listeners might even wear earmuffs over. Take that, noise trolls! And there are a lot of them these days, the consciousness of people have diminished along with courtesy, consideration, and compassion as observed. Thought I'd never share sentiments like my grandpa or those many WWII celebrated vets who keep saying something about 'that's not what we fought for' but here I am saying the same things, and I see now it's all programmed in. FINAL THOUGHTS If you were around during the 80's and part of the hip-hop and DJ culture you are fortunate enough to understand the rich history, cultural and technological heritage of the Technics (and other respected peer) brands throughout the ages. The AZ40 is a well-dressed, clean-cut, able performer of that heritage and a descendant from a long, rich line of products that have spanned the modern musical age. If you don't need true ANC, that is, powered and using mics to defeat MRT rail noise, annoying talkers, or trolls that live above you, then the AZ40 is a solid entry into multipoint premium sound TWS buds. If you prefer real ANC and need it to preserve sanity and well-being, the AZ60 is the logical choice and will reward you with a larger 8mm driver and more solid bass sound. If you are of a higher tax bracket then go with the $299 AZ80 which is the newest of the three, all of whom probably has the best sound on the market.
