A Brilliant Modern day Michael Jackson
I guess like many others I was mesmerised by the 'blinding lights' song on the radio - a marvellous catchy piece of 80s style synth pop. No kidding, I thought somebody had transported me back to 1985. In fact, before I knew who the artist was, I spent a great deal of time going through old film soundtracks - beverly hills cop, miami vice and 80s compilation albums, wondering how I'd missed this one back in the day. Imagine my surprise when I found out The Weeknd was... a rapper essentially.I thought about buying just the mp3 for 'blinding lights' or maybe a cd single. But this compilation album was reasonably priced, so I figured - why not?Seven of the tracks on the album - 'Save your tears', 'Blinding Lights', 'Can't feel my face', 'Starboy', 'The Hills', 'Call out my name' and 'After Hours' are outstanding and veritable classics in any genre. Each track stands on it's own as something you could build a whole movie around, or at least would make a great theme song. The other songs on the album are gradually beginning to grow on me.How to describe The Weeknd's music? It's a mishmash of different genres: hip hop, rap, easy listening, 80s synth pop to name but a few. But rap is apparently where he begun, and you'll hear distasteful 'rap' elements on some of the songs - women refereed to as 'bitches', and the n-word which is taboo for most of us, but not the rappers it seems. Don't let the risque stuff put you off though, you've got a music genius here I would say - Someone who can seemless weave through different musical genres, and come up with catchy outstanding songs that anyone could hum along to and enjoy. His singing voice is resonant and expressive too, and hits all the right notes.I have to thank The Weeknd for transporting me back to the 80s with 'Blinding Lights', and the video that accompanies the track is amazing - check out his youtube page. I wish I could say The Weeknd was a recent discovery, but... alas, a few years ago I heard the powerful and atmospheric 'The Hills' on maybe an advert, Tv show or film, and was blown away by it. Sadly, I never took the trouble to investigate further, and that was that.Well, better late now than never to properly discover The Weeknd, and proclaim myself a FAN. And what would they call that - a Weeknder maybe? So, yeah, The Highlights is a fab introduction to the music of The Weeknd, but you could almost feel cheated for not buying the original four albums. There's a lot more to be discovered on his youtube channel.

Love the music
I heard this last year on the radio, and again recently on a tv advertisement, so I ordered it, makes a nice change from my partner’s heavy metal.
