Historic yet current
Story telling that takes the reader to a place in time that allows one to experience and feel the emotional struggles of life for blacks living in the south during a time when white people held supreme power based on their race and blacks were at their mercy. It highlights the humiliation, triumphs, fears, loses and hopes of the people and the strength of the community to persevere. An excellent source of historical fiction that reveals so much about race relations in America today and the racial divide that is still very much a part of American culture. A must read for middle-school age readers of all races.

Let the Circle Be Unbroken
I have a high school age niece who is a reluctant reader. For Christmas last year I sent her a book or books every month. Librarian me chose from the Newbery Award books. I wanted her to learn about historical things she would never see in her social studies textbooks as well as various social issues that affect people. Let the Circle Be Unbroken is the sequel to Roll of Thunder, Here My Cry. The Logan triumphs in the end despite the prevailing treatment of black people during the Depression. Good discussions with my niece.

Gifted author makes you live the story
Mildred Taylor, through these books, and this one in particular, gave me, a white woman born two generations later, an understanding of what it was like to be black in the South in the 1930's. I think it was through this book that I began to understand that slavery didn't end as a result of the Civil War. It was renamed "sharecropping," and allowed to continue, probably to some degree until the Civil Rights movement. The story of TJ Avery was moving. TJ was framed for a murder committed by two white men, then tried in court before an all white Southern jury, people who seemed to presume that the value of black people was similar to the value of farm animals. They were equipment to be used and discarded. What justice was there for them in that environment?I learned to empathize while reading with their plight. Somehow, though, that wasn't difficult or a chore. I enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down. I would urge anyone who hasn't read them to read all three of the books in this series. They are worthwhile reading, indeed.

Amazing!
Another amazing look into history from Taylor. I really love this author. Writing from Cassie a young girls perspective of growing up in Mississippi in the 1930s she really captures the life and experiences of this young girl and her family. Though they go through hard times the book shows us that despite troubles their family and principles are really important to them. this brief glimpse into history is a beautiful yet sad depiction of how times were hard for coloured people in the past but also shows a vast contrast to how times have changed. Thouroughly recommend this book to everyone; to learn about our history and to appreciate a beautiful story by a great author. Anyone who likes To Kill a Mocking Bird will love this too!!! Great!!

A new read
The first book, of Thunder is a shorter story, whereas this one is much longer and filled with many exciting story plots. I felt the book gets to the heart of the story and I could not put it down. Well worth the read... 2nd, 3rd and 4th time too.
