Q: Can this product be split lengthwise to wrap around a cable then heat shrunk?

No. I've tried that; it simply shrinks in all dimensions and so the 2 cut sides pull away from each other. The only sure way to make it work, and it does work really well, is to slip the tube on to the wire before soldering or attaching a terminal. I have had some luck slipping a larger sized tubing over a terminal and then heat shrinking it, but generally tubing large enough to fit over the terminal is too big to shrink small enough to fit snuggly.

Q: What size wrap to use for 18 awg wire?

The kit comes with multiple colors and sizes, before repairing the wire get a shrink sleeve that fits fairly loose. The wraps shrink a lot. Repair , if heat was used on the repair slow the area to cool before sliding the wrap in place and apply heat.
