Henry V: No Fear Shakespeare Side-by-Side Plain English

I had to buy this book for my son who is a junior in high school for his school’s Shakespeare play. He said to give it 5 stars because he like how the book had the translation of the old traditional version on the left side of the book and the English version on the right side of the book. He said it was a really easy read and and to understand and got through the book without any issues!

Wow! We've read Shakespeare for years as a family, especially Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare as a quick overview before attending plays, but this line-by-line translation is perfect for our high schooler in her Shakespeare lit class. Highly recommend!

My girls love these books. They have made their school reading easier to understand.

Having attended any years of the plays at the Ashland Oregon Shakespeare Festival, I had payed little attention to the History plays. Now, do to the influence of a neighbor, I am appreciating these plays more. I found the Shakespearean/modern interpretations very helpful. Perhaps, even more helpful would have been notations explaining what was going on (terms, word meaning, etc) annotated at the bottom of each page. Also, as I find myself more and more hearing challenged, I find it best to read the play before I see it.Dare one criticize the Bard? I was disappointed at the end to see Hal praise Catherine after walking into the room for the first time. "Holy Shit! She is blessed in just about every way conceivable." (Modern interpretation).

My kids need these books for school. So easy to order here!

Tennis anyone.? Henry loves to fight. He gets all of England to go fight in France. He’s got no business there. But the French keep provoking him.

I dreaded my wife's invitations to see Shakespeare plays on stage, because most of the dialog would go straight over my head. The short synopsis generally included in the program didn't help much. But this book made a huge difference. Having read it the week before the performance of Henry V, I knew what was going on on stage, and was able to really enjoy the actors and the production.

I LOVE No Fear Shakespeare books! They are the easiest for my teenagers to not only decipher the language but really enjoy the story! We have the whole set! They're easy affordable, and are the perfect way to really get into these classic stories!

Just as expected, has orignal text one side and translated text the other, it also has some minor notes that help you understand the play better.

Natürlich ist das Stück genial, gar keine Frage. Meine Bewertung bezieht sich lediglich auf die No Fear Shakespeare Ausgabe. Das Prinzip mit dem seitenweise gegenübergestellten Text, auf der einen Seite Original, auf der anderen die Übersetzung, kannte ich schon von den zweisprachigen Reclam-Ausgaben, und dort fand ich das zum einfacheren Verständnis auch hilfreich, einfach mal schnell "spicken" zu können. Da ich jetzt aber nicht wirklich eine Übersetzung brauche, um Shakespears zu verstehen, dachte ich, dass so eine Übertragung ins moderene Englisch direkt zur Hand bestimmt auch praktisch und schön wäre. Aber leider stört mich an der No Fear Shakespeare Ausgabe aber sowohl der Text an sich als auch das Layout so sehr, dass ich sie nach ein paar Seiten zur Seite gelegt habe und glaub ich auch nicht mehr zur Hand nehmen werde.Hier findet sich sowohl im moderen als auch im Originaltext amerikanische Schreibweise, soweit ich das erkennen kann (z.B. S. 22/23, "neighbor") Vielleicht bin ich da auch etwas eigen, aber grade bei Shakespeare finde ich das irgendwie daneben und habe dann schon keine Lust mehr weiterzulesen. Erklärende Fußnoten, etwa zu politischen oder geschichtlichen Zusammenhängen, gibt es keine, was schade aber natürlich nicht schlimm ist.Was aber für ein angenehmes Lesen wirklich hinderlich ist, sind Layout und Druck dieses Buchs (und das ist dann glaube ich auch definiv für andere auch ein Problem): Das Papier ist ziemlich dünn, was an sich ja nicht störend wäre - nur ist das Buch leider nicht registerhaltig gedruckt, sprich, von der nächsten Seite scheint der Text zwischen den Zeilen durch, weil er nicht auf dem gleichen Grundlinienraster verläuft.Der Text ist so aufgeteilt, dass der Originaltext links und der monderne "Hilfstext" rechts gedruckt ist. Ich weiß ja nicht, wie ihr Paperbacks lest, aber vom Handling her fände ich das anders herum um einiges praktischer, schließlich will ich ja in ersten Linie das Original lesen. Um jeden Originaltext verläuft ringsum außerdem noch ein fast 0,5 cm breiter, tiefschwarzer Rand. Der stört dann nicht nur auf jeder linken Seite, auf der er gedruckt ist, sondern scheint natürlich noch auf jeder anderen rechten Seite durch. Außerdem auf jeder rechten Seite oben im Kopf 6,5x0,5 cm groß das doch schon sehr auffallende NO FEAR SHAKESPEARE Logo gedruckt - warum ich auf jeder Seite daran erinnert werden muss, welche Ausgabe ich grade lese, erschließt sich mir nicht so ganz.Vielleicht teste ich in Zukunft mal andere original - modern Ausgaben von Shakespearetexten, aber hier kann ich persönlich leider keine Kaufempfehlung geben.

Well translated from Shakespeare makes it fun to read. I am learning more and have a greater interest in Shakespeare.
