Does it fit mandolins well?

Although the tuners are close together on my Gretsch mandolin, this will work on it quite well when it comes to winding the strings. As it turns there is enough c!earance between the adjacent tuning keys.

How wide is the tuning peg opening, I,m thinking of using it for double bass tuning pegs?

I'm not sure: I can't visualize the tuning pegs on a double bass. The Grip is wonderful and very flexible, so it might fit. If you're unsure, contact Nomad. They could tell you.

Is there anything to cut the strings?

This is just a winder. I use a good pair of wire dikes. There is no string cutters built in. Great winder by the way.
