frosted shield is easy on the eyes, but still bright
I purchased this battery operated lantern to use during power outages specifically during hurricanes in Florida. Uses 4 D size batteries...easy to install by twisting the base cap off, inserting batteries, and twist the base back cap on. My mother has the same one with the clear shield. I ordered this to compare them. I prefer the frosted for 2 reasons: it appears 2ce as bright - throws a significantly more amount of light on objects in a room and if the lantern is within a person's view...the other has that bright center light, this one is still bright, but softened as you would expect from a frosted shield...there are 4 brightness controls that are each significantly different from each other, so you can chose your preference as needed. Appears to be good quality...I have no issues with that. It might have been nice for them to add a grip pad on the wire handle for comfort while carrying (thinking about a 90 year old handling it)...but in reality, one may walk with the lantern for only a brief bit, then it's placed on a surface or suspended from a ceiling fixture while spending time in a room...so not that big of an issue. I tested the lantern in a dark walk-in closet and in a corner of my bedroom and the lighting was very bright...could see everything so clearly...not as bright as a ceiling light fixture, but more than most lanterns...very adequate, especially when the lantern was held above my head...when lower the lighting was only bright around the immediate area and the rest of the room was dark...so you should think about this when placing the light...the handle or the inset hook feature built into the base could be used to rig the lamp suspended from a ceiling fixture, and offer plenty of light to a room...I am seriously impressed with this lantern and prefer the frosted shield to the clear after I compared them turned on one at a time, side by side in a dark room.

Much better than a flashlight for emergencies
I bought this to provide light during power failures. In such scenarios a flashlight isn't the ideal tool because you can only point a narrow beam of light in one direction. With this lantern (especially the frosted one) you get something closer to normal room lighting. It's bright for a battery powered device, but not more so than my floor lamp, even when the lantern is on its highest setting and the lamp is on low. The low setting on the lantern is pretty dim, but fine to navigate around the room. For reading you'll want to use the higher settings.I like this model because it's one of the few lanterns that use four D batteries. Most use only three, meaning you always have one left over in the pack. The fourth battery also gives you extra power, translating into greater run time and brightness. The lantern is ruggedly built, yet not too bulky to store away when not in use.Internally there are three LED COB modules giving 360 degree illumination. According to the box, each is rated at 5 Watts, translating into a brightness around that of an old-fashioned 50 Watt incandescent bulb at the maximum setting, where the run time is rated at five hours. On the minimum setting, that increases to a whopping 200 hours (seven continuous days)! I haven't verified these numbers, but I have no reason to doubt them. Do keep a spare set of batteries around so you'll always have power when you need it. Modern D batteries should last up to ten years in storage.

Frosted Lantern appears as bright as the Unfrosted Lantern
We ordered the Blazin' Sun Battery Powered 800 LED Camping and Emergency Frosted Lantern. However, the unfrosted lantern was sent by mistake. Amazon quickly corrected this error and we received the frosted lantern the next day. This gave us an opportunity for direct comparison of light emitted from each. Both lanterns are very bright. Both products appear to be well constructed and durable. We did not see obvious reductions in light emitted from the frosted plastic vs. the clear plastic lens. We noticed the frosted lens is easier on the eyes when the lantern is in use at table top height and eye level. It would be preferred for reading or playing board games. The multiple settings are great for conserving battery life. The clear lens lantern has a bit of glare but is perfect for overhead light and for lighting a large room or tent, or working on a project without electrical power. The handy fold-away hook allows the lantern to be hung upside down for this purpose. These lanterns are excellent for car camping or emergencies. We are very pleased with this product!

Nice product
Nice product. I like the 4 different levels of brightness. We just have the electricity go out and this will work in our great room very well. Takes 4 D batteries and is somewhat misleading on the life of the brightness - it made it sound like the longest life was at the highest level and that isn’t actuate - it is at the lowest level. I do not know how long it will last if left on the highest or brightest level but assume for the next storm it will be fine for the number of hours we will need it.

Amazing Lantern....
I'm very happy with this purchase and feel better prepared when the next power outage happens. I bought this lantern for storms and emergencies since I live in an area where storms and hurricanes are common. I chose this one because it had great battery life on the lower setting, which is the one that I will use most often, but at the same time is listed as the brightest on high mode. I tested it in my basement and I was shocked by how bright the 800 setting is. The entire room was covered in light. The flashlight and old lantern I compared it to were in a different league. These new LED technologies are such an improvement from the old weak bulbs I grew up with. This lantern will easily light up the room for everyone in my family to have light during the next storm. I've had it only a few days and I'll update this review if there are any durability issues, but at first glance it looks to be solidly made, I particularly like the soft rubber bumpers surrounding the base where it's most likely to get banged. Batteries were simple to install.

Excellent All Round
I am using this product for camping and it's very, very bright when on the top level. The fact that there is another couple of light levels is great as you can get it just right near the campfire!! Batteries do last well and I did drop it first time I used it. Didn't hurt it at all!

Bright but difficult
I found battery fitment and alignment extremely difficult. Lantern working although battery base still not correctly aligned. Greg
