Brinyte PT28 Full Review
Brand & Model Brinyte PT28Flashlight category Tactical, Weapon mount lightLED Cree XHP35Max. output 1600 lumensMax. beam distance 245 metersMax. beam intensity 15,200 cdBattery config. 1*18650, 2*CR123AOnboard charging Proprietary magneticModes 4Blinkies Strobe, SOSWaterproof IPX8Review publication date October 2022Introduction:Brinyte advertises the PT29 “Oathkeeper” as a tactical flashlight, and includes a tactical finger ring to push that home. Let’s see if it meets that claim.Package:The PT28 comes in a large box for a flashlight, but it has to be in order to hold all the accessories that come with it. There’s a picture of the light on the front, highlights on the sides, and detailed specifications on the back.Included in the package are:Brinyte P28Brinyte-branded 3100mAh protected 18650 batterySpare o-ringsLanyardManual cardsProprietary magnetic USB charging cableHolsterTactical ringFlashlight in use, and use cases:The light is easy to hold, though it’s large for an 18650, coming in at longer than 26650 and 21700 lights. The tail switch is easy to activate and is forward-clicky, meaning that you can half press it for momentary light. The side switch is also easy to use when changing brightness levels, though it’s flush with the body and hard to find by feel, unless you have a physical point of reference, like the clip or tactical ring. To install the tactical ring, unscrew the tail cap and slip the ring on over it. There are small grooves on either side of the tail cap that correspond with ridges on the inside of the ring to guide it on in the proper orientation and prevent it from moving. The ring is rather large, but this will accommodate wearing gloves during use. It doesn’t tail stand well due to the small posts on the end of the tail cap, and having the ring on unbalances it, making tail standing harder. The clip is nowhere near deep carry, but it seems to hold the light securely. You’re likely not going to pocket this light anyway, given its size, so that’s ok.Build quality, and warrantyThe PT28 is solidly made from aluminum with black or tan anodization. It has rectangular knurling on the head and tail while the body is mostly smooth except for a design similar to the Brinyte logo. The tactical ring is also smooth. The head has protrusions on either side which is where the side switch and magnetic charger port are, and opposite that are the flashlight's name and the Brinyte logo. You can only remove the tail cap, as the head and bezel are glued on, and the tail threads are not anodized, so mechanical lockout is not possible. When I took the tail cap off, I noticed the brass retaining ring for the tail switch spring was rather tarnished. Same with the spring on the head end of the light. These things don't affect performance, but are visually deterring. Since there are springs on both ends, the PT28 can accept a number of 18650 sized cells. The PT28 is covered by Brinyte's standard warranty: 30 day replacement and 2 year repairs. See their website for full details. The LED, lens, bezel, reflector, and beamBrinyte chose the Cree XHP35 HD for this light, specifically in 6500K. This is a cool white, domed, 3V, 3.5mm² LED designed for maximum output. The emitter is paired with a deep, smooth reflector for increased throw and housed behind anti-reflective glass and a slightly crenulated bezel. The beam has a tight white hotspot with yellowish, usable spill. While it's not going to affect things at range, there is some greenish tint shift towards the edge of the spill, and a purple halo from the AR glass. This type of light values raw output over quality of light, and you can see that in the readings from the Opple Light Master Pro. I measured a maximum of 7500K, actually, instead of the 6500K reported. Either way, it’s very cool. CRI came in at below 75 and DUV was an average of 0.0020 above BBL which is to be expected with this emitter.Dimensions and size comparison with its competitionDimensions:Dimension Millimeters InchesLength 140.4 5.52Head diameter 28.5 1.12Body diameter 25.2 0.99Weight:Weight Grams Oz.Without battery 109 3.8With battery 157 5.5The tactical ring adds another 19g/0.7oz. This light is big for an 18650 light, in both length and weight. That in itself is not a bad thing, but it’s something to keep in mind.User Interface and DriverAvailable modes: Low, medium, high, turboAvailable blinky modes: StrobeUser interface:From OFF:Side switch: NothingTail switch:Click: OnHalf-press: Momentary onHalf-press, click: StrobeTwo half-presses: Momentary strobeFrom ON:Side switch:Click: Advance modeDouble click: StrobeDouble click: SOSTail switch: OffMode memory:The light will stay in the last used non-strobe mode when you turn it back on.If you remove the tail cap, the light will default to turboLow voltage warning: The indicator light on the side switch will blink red and the light will step down.Strobe/blinkiesStrobe: Two half-presses of the tail switch from off or double-click the side switch from on.SOS: Double-click the side switch while in strobe.Lock-out mode:None?PWMNone visible.Batteries and chargingThe PT28 comes with a Brinyte branded 18650 lithium ion battery. This battery has over charge/discharge protection circuitry and a button top which make it 3.6mm longer than a standard 18650. However, because of the springs on both ends of the tube, the PT28 can accept other 18650s. Brinyte also advertises that you can use two CR123A batteries, but I do not have any to test. A capacity test with my Vapcell S4+ charger at 250mA reported 3059mAh of capacity, just under the advertised 3100mAh. Still pretty good. The PT28 also has onboard magnetic charging, which is convenient, however, the magnetic charging cable is proprietary. I don’t know of any magnetic charging systems that are not proprietary, but this is still an annoyance. If anything happens to that cable, you’re either going to have to ask Brinyte to sell you another one, or take the battery out and charge it on a regular Li-ion battery charger like with other lights. The magnetic charger just sticks to the side of the light without any other retention, so it’s very easy to accidentally disconnect. If the light even rolls on its side, the charger will fall off. One concern I had was that since the charging surface is flat, how does the magnetic charging cable know not to deliver power if it magnetizes to another piece of metal that’s not the flashlight? The low voltage protection performs well, cutting off the light before the battery gets too low. The lowest I measured after a full discharge was 2.63V which is on the low side of things, but still ok. Charging the light from there took an average of two hours and fifteen minutes, which is pretty good. At the end of charging, the battery measured 4.16V each time.PerformanceTo obtain these numbers, I used a very rudimentary integrated shoebox and ceilingbounce on my Samsung Galaxy S10. Ceilingbounce has been calibrated to match the specs of the Baton 3 as provided by Olight and corroborated with other reviewers.Lumen measurementsThis light outperformed specs on every mode, even at 30 seconds. It makes me wonder if Brinyte deliberately undersold this light, but maybe it’s better that way, so that you don’t disappoint.Turbo step down: 1min 42sMode Specs Lumens @turn on Lumens @30 sec Lumens @10 minutesLow 10 13 13 13Medium 60 71 71 71High 360 403 400 395Turbo 1600 1722 1670 440Battery Life: Runtime graphsAgain, the PT28 outlasted specified runtime on every mode with medium having the greatest difference at 34% over. Very good runtime overall, and very nice regulation. The amount of light it puts out is the same right up until it shuts off.Mode Specified runtime Measured runtime (ANSI) Time till shut offLow 98h - -Medium 16h 21h 33min 21h 33minHigh 3h 30min 3h 33min 3h 33minTurbo 1min, 1h 50min 1min 42s, 2h 22min 9h 06minANSI FL1 standards: The runtime is measured until the light drops to 10% of its initial output (30 seconds after turning on). This does not mean that the flashlight is not usable anymore. The last column shows how long the light actually works till it shuts off. If there is a + symbol, it means that the test was stopped at that particular point, but the light was actually still running. This happens on certain occasions, with certain drivers, firmware, or batteries.Peak beam intensity and beam distance measurementsThe numbers for candela were obtained with a UNI-T UT383S luxmeter at 5 and 15 meters, then averaged.Again, meets and exceeds specs. That’s quite some throw for a relatively tube-shaped light.Mode Specs Candela measured Meters YardsLow - 75 17 19Medium - 475 44 48High - 2950 109 119Turbo 15,200 16,300 255 279Extra info: Peak beam distance according to ANSI FL1 standards: The calculated value of distance in meters at which the flashlight produces a light intensity of 0.25 lux. (0.25 lux is about the brightness of a full moon shining on an object). The columns Meters and Yards show rounded numbers.BeamshotsAs you can see in the picture, the PT28 has a large hotspot and a decent amount of spill. This should be very usable.Pros and ConsPROSFull package with battery, onboard charging, and accessoriesVery good output, runtimes, and regulationExceeds all specificationsCONSMagnetic charger easy to knock offLongOn the heavier sideSlight tarnishing on some internal retaining parts (cosmetic only)Final Verdict + review scoreOverall, the Brinyte PT28 “Oathkeeper” keeps its oaths, coming in above all specifications with the exception of battery capacity, and even that’s very close. If you like to play at tactical games, the included tactical ring and body size make that a possibility, though due to the size, this is one for your bag instead of your pocket. I give it a 4.5 for meeting almost all specifications, but having a little bit of a challenge with the magnetic charging.-------------------------------Explanation on star ratings:1: Avoid: a match would be a better choice2: Poor: significant defect or issues; almost unusable3: Average: some defects or issues; but still usable4: Good: recommended (minor issues)5: Great: highly recommended (3.5 would be average but probably would buy, 2.5 below average, and wouldn’t recommend buying it)Disclaimer: This flashlight was sent to me for review at no cost by Brinyte. I have not been paid to review, nor have I been holding back on problems or defects.

One of the best
I have several torches now. These tactical lights, while I don't use them in any tactical way whatsoever, are just the perfect size. After a week or so of getting used to it, it''s pretty straight forward to use. The magnetic charging port is wonderful. The light is super bright as the specs suggest, but wider than my other similar torches, it's casts quite a nice light.I haven't used the accessories that came with it. But it did come with the finger ringer and a really nice "holster" to carry it. But they seem to be of very high quality just as the light itself it.While I've been using it, I have yet to get to the paint where you need to charge it. And one night I used it off and on for a few hours, so the battery seems to be awesome and hold a charge well.I have the desert tan and it's a nice break from the standard black.Overall, This iis a great tactical light, usually I can nitpick about something, but this just does it's intended job and does it well so there is nothing to complain about.

Bright, super easy to use, and high quality flashlight!
This flashlight is the perfect size for every day carry (edc), and it’s extremely easy to use. I love the tail switch, the carry pouch in fantastic, and it has all the modes you’d ever want. The carry pouch even has cut outs so you can turn it on and use it without removing it from the pouch! Allows you to basically have a “headlight” while hiking. Very cool flashlight and highly recommended.

Phenomenal light!
Let me start by saying that this light has the best end user design I've ever seen on a product.Every little detail on this light is designed to be useful, efficient, and helpful to the end user in so many ways.I'll start first with packaging. This light came very neatly packed with a TON of extras that honestly for the price I was shocked at.It comes with a nice nylon case that's not some cheap flimsly nylon case, it's an actual hard ballistic nylon that seems reinforced because it firmly holds its shape instead of being floppy or easily bendable. The case has a removable and adjustable belt clip that is easily put on or off the belt like a kydex holster and swivels in a detent to adjust the cant angle. It also has a stitched opening in the bottom where the lens of the flashlight is visible and the top as well exposing the button to actuate the light allowing you to use the light without ever removing the flashlight from it's case!Inside there was also a very nice camouflage paracord necklace to wear as a neck light or to lanyard it to a bag.The finger ring is also extremely well designed and made to be put on and off without needing to mess with any screws or other mounts like other flashlights I've dealt with. The finger ring simply slots into grooves machined onto the end cap meaning all you have to do to remove or attach the ring is unscrew the cap, put the ring onto the grooves, and screw it back on.There's also a spike machined onto the ring which I'm sure you can guess why.Makes a handy impact tool when held properly should a need ever arise for such a thing and when holding the light in the palm it would prevent you from breaking your fingers instead of just using a closed fist.Very well thought out and versatile flashlight!Battery life is great, light is extremely bright with great flood and spill, and the durability seems just as good.Amazing deal for the price, highly recommend this light.
