Good value for cost, great introductory instrument
I've been playing a variety of musical instruments, string and wind, for decades and picking up this lyre so far has been easy. The tuning is not as difficult as I was expecting based on other ratings, but you do have to be aware that the tuning is sensitive: a very small turn of the tool will change it almost half a tone, but I got the hang of it very quickly. The instrument itself came with strings already installed, as well as an extra set of (both metal) and a tuning tool. I'm happy with the sound of the instrument; it is of good value as so far seems to be well built. One change I made is the tuning; it recommends D-E-G-A-B-D-E, however, I've gone with a C-D-E-F-G-A-B tuning, which is how I've read Celtic lyres often used to be tuned. This means that some of the strings are not as sharp, as the tension is quite loose, but that is a personal choice I made. If you're thinking of a new instrument or sound to play with, or thinking of introducing someone new to music, this is a great instrument. The playing technique is fairly straight forward, and there are plenty decent books on Amazon to learn from.
