I mainly bought this "passive agressive" device for a comparison to what id like to build. Its a little too big but it's nice and loud with a very realistic cricket sound and reasonable battery life . I have since built something similar with a Microchip processor, but yes it can be made smaller without sacrificing sound volume or longevity. That cricket sound is hard to duplicate though.
