I use the handheld one in an open jeep, in the woods of Vermont in July-without a single bite from any and all flying biting bugs. I've had several serious reactions from black fly bites and was hospitalized for a week due to one of those reactions from black fly bites, through 100% DEET spray, and cannot afford to be bitten. These cartridge fueled products work. I also use lanterns on my back deck and the hand held ones in my yard.
