Industry Standard for Windowa 8 Development Book
As of now this is the best overall book for Windows 8 development!Fundamentals are explained extremely well and supported by excellent examples. It is an eye opener for the .NET & and WinRT "mess / mix".If you just discipline yourself to read the entire book from beginning to end, and build all of the exercises by yourself, you will be a very confident Win 8 developer that doesn't have to use Google too much.Mr. Petzold, thank you for the great book!

When Petzold's Good he's Very Good
Chas. Petzold is an amazing technologist. I have followed his books since the earliest days of Windows. At times Chas. tends to be a bit verbose and seems to enjoy sharing his obvious very deep mathematical background with his readers; witness the chapter on 3D animation. That said, there are pearls of wisdom and factoids I have not found in any other books or periodicals. I recently spent the better part of 2 days researching what should have been a simple explanation for yet another of Microsoft’s horrible error codes and/or statements. Obviously, common tasks and task definitions have undergone major changes to support Windows8. One obscure change is the definition of event handlers.Chas. Examples demonstrated the correct syntax and format which I was unable to locate on any sites to date. Bravo Chas…..As a reference and modeling guide you could not do better. My only issue is the lack of color( which of course is rather poor considering that Microsoft is the publisher).Money well spent at twice the price.Tony donato

Makes me feel like a nerd, but very well produced
This is my first time diving into any Microsoft technologies. I'm a typical Linux and open source guy. But, the idea of programming little custom apps to run on Surface and XBox using patterns and syntax I'm familiar with was appealing.The book is easy to understand for a Microsoft novice. It's well organized and thorough. I don't feel like I need to buy any other references or books to play around with code now.

Defective C++ code samples
The book itself seems to be OK (I haven't read more than a couple of chapters). The reason I'm downgrading it is that the C++ code samples do not build with Visual Studio Professional 2015 on Windows 10, due to a missing file App.g.h. It is not acceptable to have code samples that do not build.
