Listening with the Third Ear: The Inner Experience of a Psychoanalyst

Needs to be shortened
The book for practicing psychoanalysts. Too long winded and not for the layman. He offers many case examples, perhaps too much. The book feels different than I expected from Of love and lust. I'd say don't try to look too much into this book, trying to decipher subtle clues about a person is difficult for some and comes out easily for natural people.

An adventure in becoming a good listener
This is not a book for anyone looking for a "fluff" book.It can't just be read, it has to be absorbed bit by bit. There is so much to digest.I recommend it to anyone working with people - psychologists, educators. university students. It has a permanent place in my library.

This is a wonderful classic text written about the actual process happening in the room rather than how to follow a manualized protocol. Parts should still be required reading.

This isn’t what I purchased. It was advertised as Theodor Reik’s Listening with the Third Ear and I ended up with Curt Siodmak’s The Third Ear.

Listening with the Third Ear
This book reminds us that although knowlege and experience are important aspects of a skilled psychoanalyst, what sets that therapist above the ordinary is intuition, the ability to open to a guidance beyond what he has learned or books have taught. The third ear hears what the unique needs are of each individual patient. Developing intuition serves us in all walks of life, not just in our professions.

outdated
I think this is getting near the last time I read some male take on psychoanalysis. That might sound harsh, but every time I do it is always so sexist, and SO male-centric. I'm getting rather of tired of it. Though noone asked for a book recommendation: for a female take on psychoanalysis I'd recommend Karen Horney. This book might be of some value if you are investigating rather obscure parts of the history of psychoanalysis. But if you read books for insights on the human condition I think this leaves much to be desired And if you just want to learn how to understand other people better (how to listen to them with the 3rd ear) well that is not really what this book is about either.

Book sold as new but it was not new
As I read through this book I discovered pages marked up with yellow highlighter. While the book was in otherwise good condition, it was obviously previously read. It was a bit discomfitting.
