What makes this different from any of the many 6-12" micro-usb cables available for about $5 or less?

In a word: "nothing." The longer the cord, the more power-loss you get. So if you can find a 6-12" cord for $3 that's not super-low quality, it'd work just as well as this over-priced cord.

Will this power the fire TV unit?

Plugged it into a 2013 Panasonic Viera plasma (the last one Panasonic made), bootstrapped the Fire Stick, and a warning came on asking me to connect the AC adapter. Ignored the warning, and it is working fine. So far. I will eventually use this to charge my Fire tablet and other small devices from an electrical outlet, and I'll connect the AC adapter for the Fire TV despite the cable clutter. This short cable has some utility outside of Fire TV. For under $5, it's worth having. I'd be upset if I'd paid $5.01.

why do you have to buy this while it’s not giving power connections thru usb and fire tv stick

You should use the power wall wart since USB ports are underpowered for the stick. Besides, when the TV is off, the USB is dead so the stick is dead whereas with the wall power, the stick is always on and doesn't need to wait for a cold boot.

The usb on my tv says it is 500ma, so it looks like that would not be sufficient. is that correct?

USB ports on televisions only have enough power for usb thumb drives. This is what they are intended for. Plugging in things like fire sticks and LED strip lights into the tvs USB ports may sometimes work, you are at great risk of overloading the circuits and permanently damaging you television. For safe operation use the fire sticks AC adaptor as directed.
