## Description

FetHead Germanium is a high quality, in-line microphone preamplifier. It provides a punchy and direct, ‘larger than life’ germanium sound for ribbon and dynamic microphones, adding classy Germanium harmonics. Sounding full and rich it is reminiscent of much higher priced vintage gear, making FetHead Ge's desirable coloration a really great addition to (Interface) preamps which sound rather neutral. Germanium transistors were widely used in earliest transistor designs by Neve, EMI, Telefunken, and Fairchild, and have developed a reputation for a decidedly vintage mojo that remains sought after today. We created a novel hybrid circuit that consists of low noise JFets and a hand-selected ‘new old stock’ germanium transistor to take full advantage of the "Germanium" sound and at the same time achieve the same sonic quality we are known for. Some ribbon microphone do not tolerate phantom power. FetHead Germanium circuit uses 48v phantom power but shields it from the microphone, your microphone is protected. Review: Oh - my - god, what a difference - I normally don't write reviews, but this is such a game changer. I am a very experienced podcaster, and recently have been out on the road and just been in disbelief at how bad my SMB7+Zoom H6 sounds - the noise floor was SO HIGH! I had to process it to the point of it sounding robotic to get rid of it. Descript Studio sound often works miracles but even that was struggling. Who would have thought it would be this simple? With this attached, I can dial the H6 from level 8 down to level 4 or 5. At 4 the noise floor isn't even audible, around -60db compared to -50db without at the same level. I could presumably make it even better by swapping out the H6 for something lower noise, but this alone is pretty much all you need, HUGE improvement

I had to crank it to get enough level just to be heard on my Podcasting software. I bought this, watched a bunch of reviews on YouTube first. Literally plug and play. I now have my gain set to 50% and am way louder than before. Great headroom and so clean. Zero his. It fits in my pocket, not that it will leave my desk. Don't need a second XLR, goes right into the mic.

**Q: Will this work for an Audiotechnica AT2035 for voice work?**
A: The FetHead GE will not work for the AT2035 or other phantom-powered mics, but the FetHead Phantom will work for those models.

**Q: What is the difference with this germanium version? is this useful only for musical instruments? i will only do voice podcasting with shure sm58 mic.**
A: Hello, I’ve tried this with 2 mics, shure sm58 & sm7b. The first thing I noticed was less gain is needed after installing. But for vocals I couldn’t even notice any difference while hearing records I did. So I think it might do more of a better job for musical instruments. ALSO if you’re using sm58 for podcasts, just tweak with EQ’s and this mic will sound soooo goood! I’m using this mic for almost everything including podcasts. Its a great mic. And if your buying it to reduce white noise or ambient noise, this doesn’t solve it. You gotta buy a good/decent soundboard/mixer to reduce white noise AND treat the room your podcasting in, close AC put carpets on the floor etc. to reduce ambient noise. And so you’ll have a great time podcasting/streaming.

If you have a dynamic mic and you have to crank the input gain on your audio interface to get a decent signal level, this is a must-have alternative. Gives you a strong, clean signal and allows you to keep the input gain down, lowering the noise floor. If you're a $10k professional music producer, you'll probably want a higher-end preamp. If you're making a podcast and just want a decent mic signal, this is a well-made, cost-effective solution.
