## Description

(2-LP set) The Jason Pierce-led space-rock group, Spiritualized, will take you on a voyage into the unknown with this aptly-titled 1992 debut. All the sounds on Lazer Guided Melodies are perfectly placed in space making it a masterpiece of economy and expression. It is authentically emotional as silence and simplicity are as crucial as the more complex instrumentation. An album to be heard with a set of headphones in a dark room and, above all, in its entirety. A pinnacle of the dream pop albums genre: essential!

Lazer Guided Melodies Is The Perfect Prescription: To Be Taken Aurally In Heavy Dosages

*by K***A on Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2011*

Sounding raw and bristling and tunefully aggressive, Spacemen 3 kept their chord progressions simple but thickly layered for most of the band's lifespan, as if they were levitating chainsaws within an airborne maelstrom. Most people who are familiar with Spacemen 3 know that it was essentially driven by the force of two guitarists (and clashing personalities), Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember and Jason "Spaceman" Pierce.Marking an extreme and extremely positive transition by separating the heavy braids weaving the texture of Spacemen 3's sounds into strands that are much more infinitely and intricately seamed, Jason Pierce rewove some of the most punishing , chord-simple, massively distorted , guitar-driven psychedelia produced by that band into one of the most inherently tuneful, universally cohesive suite of patiently ,organically built arrangements to be embedded within tracks rich with note-perfect depth. This was accomplished upon the release of "Lazer Guided Melodies", his debut recording as the driving force behind Spiritualized.A friend of mine once dismissed "Lazer Guided Melodies" as "..the Stone Roses on valium." before listening to it with a pair of good headphones and an attentive ear. Subtle, supple, and sonically lush, each song contains a multiplicity of instruments producing deliberative, heavily orchestrated melody in tandem with a rich, atmospheric background texture behind it, making it more of an aural equivalent of a heightened state that might be triggered by hallucinogenic means, rather than just one approximating a heavy narcotic rush."Lazer Guided Melodies" is a timeless release. Meditative, evocative, and exquisitely arranged, it's one of the few recordings I would place on a "desert island disc" collection, and one the few I've had to replace more than once due to wear imposed upon it. This is Jason Pierce's finest hour, and there isn't a wasted note on this release. If you're new to Spiritualized, just access the mp3 page and play a few of the outtakes, which mange to pack more soul into thirty seconds than some bands do into thirty minutes.

    dreadfully boring

*by K***R on Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2018*

Spiritualized is soooo over-rated! I have tried, several times, to listen to their albums, as the reviews made them sound like a band I would love. But alas, I find them unlistenable and dull. So very very dull.

I like it better than "Ladies and Gentlemen

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2016*

I like it better than "Ladies and Gentlemen ..." - it seems to have a bit more atmosphere to it.Reminds me a lot of "A Storm in Heaven" by The Verve, except just a bit quieter, if you're into that sort of thing as well. More psychadelic I would say than shoegaze, which is generally a negative for my personal music tastes as I tend to prefer bands like Slowdive, MBV, Swervedriver, and Ride, but this is quite a joy to listen to.
