great period drama
This movie is supposed to be about a circuit riding Methodist preacher in the early 1900's in north Georgia. there are good performances here by William Lundigan as the preacher and Susan Hayward as his wife, who also narrates the saga. At no time during the entire movie do I ever hear the name Jesus mentioned. The songs are gospel, but not directly related to Him either. I don't know if this is an oversight by the producers or whatever. It is not there. the only time, in fact, Lundigan ever mentions the Trinity is when he baptizes his dead son, something i don't think would have been done by any preacher. Otherwise, this is an outstanding drama about life in a rural community where everyone knew everyone else and the church was small.

An enjoyable movie.
I have always enjoyed this movie and have watched it several times on tv. The plot and acting are good. I feel that William Lundigan and Susan Hayward do a great job playing the role of the minister and his wife. They seem to bring the characters alive. I have always enjoyed watching Susan Hayward's movies. She always does a great job making her characters come alive. Her role of a ministers wife in the movie was a little different from the other characters she has played but I feel she does a great job in it.

Very nice movie but a very disappointing print!
Just got that movie from Amazon.com. I only had it on an old S-VHS tape done from TV many years ago in England and later have copied it to DVD R. I'm surprised that the sound and picture quality of the new FOX MOD even does look poorer than my old copy. It seems FOX still hash't learned: They are still offering mostly poor prints on MOD for much money!! The FOX MOD picture is very soft with a low contrast and disappointing color. That film deserves a much better release on DVD R since it is such a nice movie of the kind of films they don't make anymore. And it has the great Susan Hayward playing the leading role! But I presume we never will see it in better quality. So buy it if you have never seen it. But don't expect a good print.

A worthwhile trip to a Country Church!
A genuine gem of a movie which has been over-looked and under-rated for fat too long. It is a delightful peice of Americana and a great insight into the life of a Country Minister and his wife. Good acting on all parts and William Lundrigan shines as the main character. Susan Hayward is also excellent as his wife. Great colour photography, good humour and deep pathos mark this film and set it aside from many films of its type. An all around excellent film ranking with Richard Todd's "A Man Called Peter."
