Easy to install, very effective in keeping your little one safe.

Not fun to put on cabinets. But I’m so used to having on kitchen cabinets I decided to put in bathroom, hallway and some bedroom cabinets. Don’t feel like having everything fall out on the floor or on top of me again or on the animals. These work really well and I’ve had them on kitchen cabinets for years. They are a habit when using.

Magnetic cabinet/drawer locks, such as  Cabinet Locks: Magnetic Tot Lok Starter Set  and  Adhesive Mount Magnet Lock - Starter Set , are probably the best choice for protecting children from harm. But they are somewhat expensive (at least a few dollars each), and cannot be installed on certain cabinets/drawers. So here are my observations on five press-to-open latches & catches from four manufacturers. While all are less expensive than magnetic locks, children can defeat them more easily.Each has pluses and minuses, and you may want to buy several types for different locations in your home. Depending on the hardness of the wood or particle board of your cabinets/drawers, all may require drilling to install well. In addition, double-sided tape or tabs like  Henkel HU-5 Duck Double Sided Mounting Tabs, 60-Count  are helpful for temporary positioning/testing, and a short Phillips screwdriver such as found in  Wilmar W80004 4 Piece Mini Stubby Screwdriver Set  facilitates turning the screws on the catches when mounting in a drawer.All the latches allow the cabinet/drawer to be opened slightly; they are listed in order from smallest to largest "allowable opening," which I'll define as the distance between the vertical plane drawn through the heads of the catch screws (to control for differences in the front-to-back thickness of the wood on which the catch is mounted) and the inside vertical part of the cabinet/drawer door.THIS PRODUCT [Safety 1st Spring n' Release Latches (10 pk)]: Also available as  Safety 1st Spring n' Release Latches (3 pk) . Has a metal spring to return the latch to an "up" position, unlike others here which rely on the flexibility of the shaft to do so. Includes double-sided tabs. HIGHS: The "allowable opening" is only about 1-1/4 inches. Relatively easy to install latch because screw holes are slot-shaped (which allows for some vertical movement). LOWS: After cabinet/drawer is partially opened by child, it's possible that child can injure him/herself when attempting to reclose it. After cabinet/drawer is fully opened, probably need to press down on latch to close depending on how precisely it was installed. Must unscrew latch to disable it. American Red Cross Ultra Strong Metal Safety Cabinet Latch - 4 pack : The catch consists of a single screw installed at an angle, unlike the others here which have plastic catches with two screws. HIGHS: The "allowable opening" is only about 1-1/2 inches. Made of stainless steel, which is probably more durable than the plastic construction of other latches here. LOWS: Slightly difficult to install latch because screw holes are round (not slot-shaped). After cabinet/drawer is partially opened by child, it's possible that child can injure him/herself when attempting to reclose it. After cabinet/drawer is fully opened, probably need to press down on latch to close. Although end of latch has plastic protector, the sides are somewhat sharp. Must unscrew latch to disable it. KidCo Swivel Cabinet & Drawer Lock 4ea : This is in the middle of the pack in having an "allowable opening" of 1-3/4 inches. HIGHS: Relatively easy to install latch and catch because screw holes are slot-shaped. Latch can be temporarily disengaged by twisting it 90 degrees (I see no purpose to turning it 180 degrees as in the manufacturer's photo). LOWS: After cabinet/drawer is partially opened by child, it's possible that child can injure him/herself when attempting to reclose it. After cabinet/drawer is fully opened, probably need to press down on latch to close (even though instructions say "automatically locks when closed"). Safe Lok Cabinet and Drawer Locks (6 pack) with Temporary Disable Feature by Mommy's Helper : Plastic catch is 7/8" in height, unlike other plastic catches here which are <3/8" in height. HIGHS: Relatively easy to install latch and catch because screw holes are slot-shaped and because mounting template is provided for latch. After cabinet/drawer is partially opened by child, latch holds the door in open position, thus preventing injury upon reclosing door. (To unlatch, you have to push the door slightly in while pushing down on the latch, then pull the door.) After cabinet/drawer is fully opened, can close it without pressing on latch. Latch can be temporarily disabled by sliding it upwards from its bracket (alternatively, latch can be "permanently" installed without the bracket). LOWS: I was unable to confirm claim on front of package "allows cabinets and drawers to open only one inch"; each time I installed it, there was an "allowable opening" (as defined above) of 2", tied for the most in this group. SAFETY 1st 14 Pack Wide Grip Latch : Also available as  Safety 1st Wide Grip Latches (7 pk) . Includes double-sided tabs. HIGHS: Relatively easy to install latch because screw holes are slot-shaped. After cabinet/drawer is fully opened, can close it without pressing on latch. LOWS: The "allowable opening" is about 2 inches. After cabinet/drawer is partially opened by child, it's possible that child can injure him/herself when attempting to reclose it. Must unscrew latch to disable it.Purchase one or more of these from Amazon.com!

Two year old hates them, we love them. He cannot get into our drawers even as stubborn and strong as he is. Great product.

The media could not be loaded.  ***One year update, kid now 2 as well***We have had these installed for over a year and they still work great. We have not had a single one break and our kid, who is over 2 now, still doesn’t not get into any cabinets or drawers with these installed. I had one latch that needed a slight adjustment and tightening of the screw so the door closed, but otherwise they’ve been solid. I’d definitely buy these again as they’ve kept our kid out of places with things he shouldn’t play with. We even have them in drawers in bathroom that have hair product and other dangerous items. It’s a little tight to open but well worth the peace of mind.There are a lot of cabinet locks out there. Some of the ones like the magnetic ones may work better, but because of the price of those and quantity of doors we had between kitchen, bathrooms, etc....I did not want to spend that much money.I settled on these as they seemed much bulkier than most and less likely to break. I also liked the spring loaded feature so that you aren’t constantly bending plastic and weakening it.Install is easy. Just a couple screws for each piece and has a nice piece to easily mark each one.The biggest complaints seem to be the cabinet not closing by itself. I thought the same thing at first until one of the locks I installed was a little off Center which allowed it to close without having to push down the lock.I went back and readjusted all the other to be the same and now we can close the cabinet without holding down the lock and they CANNOT be opened at all still. We even have soft close cabinets and they still work.The trick is to make sure the piece that goes on the door, the spring loaded piece, lined up with the sloped area on the other piece screwed in to the cabinet. That sloped area is where the screws go in that piece. Because of the slope, it allows the handle to student over it without being pushed down. Once closed and you try to open it, it’s then far enough over to latch onto the straight edge portion in the middle so it can’t be opened.While that’s a little complicated, for the price and effectiveness and now ease of use after installing, I think it’s worth it overall.I included a couple pictures to try and better detail what I am trying to explain, along with a video of it working. We have these locks on our kitchen cabinets to keep the dogs from getting into the garbage and cleaners and items under the sink. We had installed some about 15 years ago and they finally gave out.

Likes: Made of plastic so it won't damage our cabinets. Don't need a tool to open cabinets.DISLIKES: 1. The little cardboard template that comes in the package must NOT be made for American Cabinets. The holes in it will NOT allow the mechanism to slip on to the catch piece. In addition the cabinet will NOT open far enough to fit anybodies finger between the opening in order to open the door.2. The LATCH piece that goes on to the DOOR itself needs to be LONGER so a finger could slip in to unlock the cabinet. You might think that this is adjustable...but NO...it's not. I am currently trying to add spacers of about 1/3 to 1/2 of an inch to this part but it does NOT look like that will work either.3. After a couple of hours playing around with trying to make it fit, I finally got one installed on one side of the door BUT the CATCH does not hold the LATCH piece and the door can be easily opened without much effort at all.These are a real piece of JUNK.

Great product

The product seams very good, but like others have mentioned they didn't work on my cabinets because the latches are too short, and I could barely fit my fingers in to open the latch. The product is good quality, and easy to install it just didn't work for the thickness of my cabinet fronts. I ended up ordering longer latches from Safety 1st. I recommend buying in small quantities first if you are considering this product to make sure it will work for your cabinets.

I feel these are reliable and good quality. You have to drill holes and screw them into the cabinets. Measuring and drilling can be more annoying than adhesive locks but I find this product has a stronger hold than another model brand I used. It's wider too which makes unlocking easier. Overall it's a good product.
