Locking mechanism could use some work.
I ordered the AVACON M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure for M.2 PCIe NVMe and SATA SSDs (EC-SNVE) to take advantage of some of my unused M.2 drives. I was hoping to turn them into portable drives. The Avacon enclosure arrived with the enclosure, two USB cables (types A & C), and a cloth bag for transport. The installation is fast, easy, and toolless. When using with a new drive, there is an additional step of formatting the drive for first use, but as I was using a drive that already had data on it, it was ready to go as soon as I put the enclosure back together. It is also very light weight.A few notes:1. Though the toolless design is nice, the endcap that locks the drive tray in place is easily dislodged. I put the enclosure in my pocket, took a few steps, and the endcap had fallen off completely. I thought I may have assembled it wrong at first, but after several tests, I had the same results. Unfortunately, this also resulted in the holding tray and my drive falling out of the enclosure completely and dropping to the ground once. My advice is to store it in the included bag for travel, and be careful when removing it after transport.2. The enclosure did not work on any of my computer’s front USB ports (even though other peripherals do). It did work when I plugged it into the ports on the back of my computer. So, if it doesn’t work at first, you may want to try a different port. Once I plugged it into the back USB port, it fired up and worked great.3. I tested the drive on a PC running Windows 11.4. The enclosure does not seem built for repeated drive swapping; I think I’ll be able to swap drives a few times, but the plastic tray and rubber screw inside feel like they’ll wear out quickly with repeated drive swaps. If you are looking for an inexpensive enclosure to provide access to an M.2 drive, as I was, and only expect light use, this may be the right enclosure for you. However, if you want an enclosure for more transportable and heavier uses, you may want to look for one that has a more secure locking mechanism.

Nice looking and worked flawlessly
I am using this enclosure with a WD SN750 500G NVMe SSD on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ running the Ubiquiti Unifi Controller. I know its overkill for this Raspberry Pi model, but price difference between an NVMe and an older M.2 sata SSD is almost negligible. I’ve also tried this on a Windows 10 PC and a MacBook Pro running the latest MacOS. This drive-enclosure combination worked flawlessly in all scenarios. The enclosure comes with 2 short USB cables. One’s USB-A to USB-C and the other USB-C to USB-C. The enclosure can be disassembled and assembled easily. All the pieces just snap or slide together. The SSD is held flat by a rubber push pin that came inside the enclosure (see photos). The push pin was loose and dropped to the ground when I first open the enclosure. Careful not to lose. This enclosure looks sleek and works well with my SSD. I’m very happy with it.

Perfect!
I upgraded the SSD in my notebook, so I wanted something to let me keep using the old one. This enclosure was perfect, exactly what I was looking for.It only took a minute to install the SSD into this, and it works perfectly. It comes with two different cords, so you can plug it into a regular USB port or USB C.It’s the perfect size to fit in a pocket, and it works on all of my computers. This is a great way to have a ton of storage in a small package.

Definitely an easy add on
Though my new desktop has an extra internal SSD slot, I wanted one that could be taken with me when I travel. This case allowed me to install an SSD with ease. The drive fit perfectly with no tools needed. It came with both an A type and C type USB wires so it will work with any computer. Once the system recognized the new drive, it was as if it was port of the system. I definitely like this case

Works fine, but I wouldn't use it for frequently swapping M.2 cards
I had mixed results with this M.2 enclosure. One M.2 (M key) drive wouldn't initialize unformatted, another initialized fine. Once the drive it wouldn't allow to be read was formatted in a different enclosure, I was able to put it back in this one and it came up just fine. No idea what the issue was but be aware that you might have issues if you're loading in a brand-new M.2 to create an external drive. Beyond that random issue, the sliding cover that allows access to the internals is a little on the loose side. Taping over it solved the issue, but that doesn't make a very appealing visual. I plan on continuing to use it, but it won't be an enclosure I use to swap out M.2's for testing, diagnostics, or data recovery. There are better options out there for those uses.

Great DIY alternative for external drives
I received two USB C to USB A cables instead of the USB C to USB C cable so I am using it with a dongle on the M1 MacBook Air (2020). Doesn't bother me so much since I have a bunch of the USB C to USB C cables. Overall, it works well with my Samsung 980 1TB NVMe SSD and this is a much better alternative to paying obscure prices for 1 TB SSD external drives. Go DIY, guys!

Easy to set up
Only took me about 2 minutes to instal the SSD into the unit. Worked straight away, no set up required. The first one I bought (different brand) was a dead duck, this one works perfectly.

A great product
My laptop died with required data that was not backed up. This device saved my life. One the NVMe was removed from the laptop it was a simple matter to fit it to the case and connect to a USB port.I would recommend this product but recommend you backup your data also.

Great - but comes with a (flimsy) catch
The media could not be loaded. Something like this M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure from Avacon really highlights to me how far technology has come in recent years. It wasn’t long ago where my laptop case for weighed down by the laptop’s power brick, the laptop itself and a massive external hard drive (alongside it’s own massive power brick!) and to think we’ve now got super powerful M.2 SSD’s that have both considerable storage space and a very convenient form factor is just mind blowing to me.There’s a lot to like with this enclosure – it doesn’t look bad, has a neat and sleek little case and doesn’t require an external power supple. Once you’ve got the SSD inserted, it’s truly plug and play. It’s got a tool free installation of the SSD, which unfortunately highlights a couple of annoyances with the design. The enclosure can be easily (almost too easily!) opened by simply sliding the back of the frame. Once open, you mount your SSD and insert a rubber “screw” to hold in place. Both the slide back and rubber screw does not make this enclosure well suited for traveling, as chances are something will come loose during long journeys, which is a massive shame as the form factor’s begging to be made use of via travel benefits. The good news is that it is compatible with a variety of M.2 sizes, doesn’t appear to have any heat issues despite only a small grill for airflow and works well via usb-a and usb-c. It would have been great to see some form of “lock” catch in the case to stop the back latch from accidentally being opened while in travel but if you’re planning to just make use of an existing M.2 SSD for some external storage, then this might not an issue for you.
