Q: Is this skillet oven proof?

Yes it is. I had it in the oven up to 400 degrees.

Q: What type of oil do you to season

Canola, corn, vegetable, peanut, even butter, lard, or spray on no-stick. The most important part is to "seal" it, actually seasoning it. To confirm it's "seasoned", after using an oil of some sort, even before using it to cook with the first time, bake it by itself at 350 degrees in an oven or grill for about 30 minutes. If it has sheen to it, it's seasoned. If used properly, make sure it's hot before you start cooking, there's no worry about sanitation. Once seasoned cast iron is more non-stick than any of the high dollar no-stick coatings (usually doesn't last past the first "searing"). With cast iron you can use metal utensils on it instead of flimsy plastic or nylon. It's not hard but take care of it and it'll take care of you, never use soap to clean it, steel wool or scrub pad is best., there is no substitute in the best flavor for cooking with cast iron. From biscuits, pies, casseroles, mashed potatoes, fried chicken or French fries. Take them camping and set them on the coals of the fire, or use them in the kitchen on a stove or in an oven. Cast iron lids make them virtually indestructible. Glass is nice to see through but if you're half a cook, you can work around not seeing every second of the cooking process. Best hash browns or fried eggs you'll ever taste are cooked on a cast iron griddle.

I'm not sure to be honest, it's completely cast iron. Only thing with this pan is it needs greased and cleaned Everytime you use it.
