Perfect for pecans, wonderful for walnuts
This cracker works great for cracking pecans. Put the ends of the nut up against the metal bits, adjust the threaded bit until there is about .5 to .75 of slide before the handle won't go any farther. This means you have to adjust a little for each nut, but it will prevent you from over-crushing it. If you don't get enough of a crack, turn the nut and to it again. Soon you'll get the hang of where the threaded bit needs to be.It also works great for walnuts, but those are easier. I have another cracker that works just as well. But for pecans, this is the only one I'll use.Mine came with the threaded piece installed backwards. The smooth end should be on the outside, opposite from where the nuts rests, so you can adjust it without grabbing the threads. But it was easy to twist it out and put it in the correct way. This looks like a well built device. I expect it to last.

Very nice and durable. I mounted it to a 1x6x16 board which made it easier to crack nuts.
It was very easy to use once I mounted it to a 1x6x16 board. The original board is to small.

No squeezing needed
Love this - wish it were a bit heavier, would be easier to handle. But easy to adjust - even a couple of times on the same nut - works really well. Haven't tried it on Brazil nuts yet or macs (but they seem to need a hammer anyway - like black walnuts). Much happier arthritic hands!

Its easy to use and works great for pecans. I only have a pecan tree so I dont have other nuts to try yet. Great for pecans.

Probably Ok for peanuts or pistaschios. Failed to crack black walnuts - those are tough! the bar bent while trying to crack my first nut. both the nuts and nutcracker went in the trash.

Great Nutcracker
This is so much better than those hand-held nutcrackers. I have a lot of pecans and this makes relatively quick and efficient work of them.

The base is soft wood, most likely pine.
There were imperfections in the base in that it had some small chips as though something had dug into it (likely pine, soft wood base) and the metal had some imperfections as well. As there was not much damage to the box it comes in, I have to assume the manufacturer does not quality check the items well. As a nutcracker, I am more than satisfied though as it is similar to one my great grandmother had and does it's job well.
