Great Media Server
Long story short, I owned a Netgear NAS PRO6000E for several years and it worked great! The power supply died and although it is still under warranty, Netgear refuse to replace the unit because they said the unit was purchase from a unauthorized retailer( the high end retailer is very respectable) , which they did not informed me at the time I purchased and registered the unit. I had a choice to either repair the Pro 600E(power supply no longer available) or buy a new unit. The original power supply cannot be source from anywhere. I decided to buy another NAS and the 626x was my choice because it is a great server and it is easy to setup and use. This NAS is extremely fast with Western Digital Red Pro 6TB drives. I almost did not purchase this unit because of the Netgear refusal to honor their warranty on the Pro 6000E. I have own the 626x for several weeks now comparing it to a Synology NAS which is very nice and very easy to use. The more I see the the dead Pro600E, the more I am thinking about returning the 626x because I am still ticked off with netgear poor customer service. Bottom line is the NAS 626x is a great unit!

It needs constant attention and not for the faint of heart
At first the product worked great. I set it up and everything was fine. One month later we had problems with it. Tech support worked with me for almost 2 weeks, but we got it back up. Unfortunately I had to restore all the files on it. I do back them up it took about a week. We had problems again, I was forced to completely wipe it and put everything back on again. Now I got an error message and according to the users page, which is all the free support I can get now due to the fact I've had it more than 3 months, it looks like I'll have format and try again. I run away from this product as fast as you can. Unless you like to constantly restore backups and play with hardware. If it worked just like it did for the first month, I'd say we're golden and it's great. However I don't have time to format the drives set up the backups and the other programs and restore all the backups once or twice a month. From what I've seen on the bulletin boards, that's exactly what will happen to you if you buy it. I'd venture to say this is where Netgear makes their makes their money, pay for them to fix it every month and they don't need to sell equipment. That's just my opinion. I am how ever fairly descent in Linux and can set up a computer rather quickly and I find it annoying that it will not hold it's settings and go more than 30 days without giving an error. On this last one I've spent my entire weekend over twenty hours the last two days researching what others have done to get rid of the latest error. I tried everything they said. I've come to terms that I will have wipe it and start over again. If I could return it after 4 months for a full refund I definitely would. This has left such a bad taste in my mouth for netgear, I would never touch anything that they make ever again.

high-performance solid NAS but with some noise
This is the 4th Netgear ReadyNAS I had buy. My old RN312 still working. It's solid and slient, but disk is almost full. Now I'm working on data migration from RN312 to the new RN626x. I'm mostly happy with the RN626x, it have 6 slots so I can migrate from RAID1 to RAID5 and expect great performance improvement. The RN626x come with a big box than RN312. But the bigger box also introduce resonance of low frequence noise. Seems the noise from motor of hard disk got amplified by the surface of chassis. I can hear buzzing when sit near the NAS. Once I put my hand at the left of right side of classis, the buzzing is gone almost. Finally, I stick a little foamed plastics between the metal board below main board and the left side of chassis, then the noise reduce a lot. Hopes the Netgear gays can notice it can fix in next product. BTW, I can run Gentoo Linux on it with control of front panel, using the kernel source provided by netgear. That's really great!

DOA.
My 4th ReadyNas device. I have had one (NV+) since 2010 from when they were Infrant. Needing to expand beyond two JBOD disks in my current backup (RN212) , decided to move my Pro Pioneer to backup role (that one's PowerSupply died just before warranty expired and I got a replacement) and get a new 626X.Machine refused to go beyond "Welcome". Tried the reset method (Keep reset button on the rear pressed and turn on:.. 2 minutes later, no boot menu). Tried USB restore via most recent firmware (Press the center button after navigation button lights go out: no dice, no USB boot indication). Will try a replacement 626X and see if it works. Given Amazon's abysmal packaging (they put this in a giant box with one sheet of brown paper! For a 23lb NAS. Special paper fortified with prayers maybe), it is likely the movement inside the outer box was similar to someone dropping the NAS. Will get a replacement from amazon and see how it goes. I haven been happy enough with ReadyNAS that I will likely try another vendor with better packaging if the second one from Amazon is also garbage. An year back, when a friend asked me about NAS, I had strongly pushed him toward ReadyNAS but he went with Synology instead. When I searched online today, almost all threads (Reddit especially) seem to push folk away from ReadyNAS citing abysmal customer service. Very sad!
