Q: To change the air flow direction it says to switch the back plate and gauge. How do you take gauge off? (normally left to right but I need to switch)

To remove the plate from the gauge you will turn it counter clockwise and unscrew the gauge. Then on the back of the filter/regulator you will just unscrew it and install the gauge from the other side and then reinstall the plate as well.

Q: is the filter replacable or does it need to be replaced ever?

It may be cleaned with soapy water, and let dry before putting back into the unit, depending on air quality going into the unit will have an impact on how often you'd like to clean it in the method described.
