Does it need a separate usb board to connect to a pc/mac? how about the wired version of the robot (yellow)?

Yes, a separate USB board is required to interface with the PC. The same goes with the wired (yellow) version.

Why didn't I get a PC board

The kit includes a PC board as it is a critical component of the operation. If you purchased a new kit it should include a PC Board.

How wide do the grippers open?

All the way however they don’t ratchet it’s a wing nut to a set position
