New Starion SZM-V16-FD-63 Normally Open Microwave Oven Micro Switch RE1

Fixed my Kenmore Model 40185043210. After just over four years of normal operation, it then began misbehaving. The Microwave fan would turn on every time you opened the door. Double checked with some water and a cord tied to the door to ensure it stayed open to prove it wasn't sending out microwaves! (It wasn't). Sears parts web site tells you to get a technician to fix due to some parts retaining charge when unplugged. I ignored that warning. (I treated it like an old Tube TV, so only touch what I needed to)Procedure to replace:1) Remove door - simply lift straight up and then move away from microwave (there are two pins in the door that sit in flanges that hold the door.2) Remove plastic vent at top of microwave (There were three screws on the top across the majority of the larger left part of the unit. Plus two more screws deeper inside the vents on the right. I ended up breaking a small hidden plastic piece because I tried removing it without removing the left inner screw.3)Lift up the right control panel up and let rest hinged open (Grounding screw plus other wires are connected to control panel from back. Not worth removing!!)4)Remove two torx / security screws in the bar between the main microwave cavity and the wires behind the control panel.5)Slip out the bracket that hold three switches.6)look at the bottom most switch, on the left side of the bracket there is a little tab you need to move forward to release the switch7)Pull out the switch and replace leads from it to new switch.8)Put back together in reverse of how you took it apart.

The fan started running when the door was opened. (GE JVM1750DP2WW mfg. 2012). There are three door switches in mine.Top and bottom are this one (Normally Open) and the middle one is SZM-V16-FD-62 (Normally closed) MAKE SURE YOU GET THE CORRECT ONE. My faulty one was the bottom switch. There are some real good youtube video's on how to replace them. I was lucky, on mine I could do it without removing the microwave and only a few screws. I also needed a T-15 Torx.

Exact replacement, but expensive. This switch should sell for $3-$5. Be sure to check the Starion number on the switch, there are slight differences, and some vendors appear to be using the wrong picture for the part they advertise.

My husband replaced the bad sensor in our microwave and put this one in and it has worked great!
