Just wow!
Don’t even bother buying this if you just want the shell, it will literally fall apart in your hands! If you thought the regular shp9500’s were “fragile” you’d be in for a surprise. Sound like soup cans, even when converted into open backs they were only OK. Completely pita to driverswap and mine weren’t even wired correctly internally, the left driver ground was disconnected…

Great for SHP9500 Pad Replacement
While these definitely aren't the same quality (physically or sonically by any means) as the original Philips SHP9500, they work great for a replacement pair of pads, especially at $12! The pads seem to be made of the same quality material and are extremely comfortable just like the originals. They don't make any change to the sound signature of the SHP9500, like you get with some aftermarket pads. Albeit, the foam on the Magnavox pads is a little thicker so if you had issues with driver contact on the original pads, these could be considered an upgrade. The only modification, which isn't absolutely necessary, the pads on the Magnavox, don't have provisions for the indexing tab on the SHP9500 body (the one that doesn't actually clip). To fix that, you can just shave that tab off the SHP9500 body and everything clips into place and aligns perfectly.

These sound terrible - like you're in a hollow drum - no dynamic response & flat fidelity
The only laudatory thing I can state about these headphones is that for me, they were VERY comfortable to wear. They fully enclosed my ear, didn't push my earring in such that the post poked into my skin, they didn't make me perspire around the ear cups such that they slid in any direction on my head as I moved around, & the cushions were quite comfortable. I wore them for well over 4 hrs. w/o a problem. While wearing them, however, I did notice that they rattled. Mostly on the left earpiece, they had that plastic rattle as if something in the housing was loose. It further detracted from the lousy sound. Now, as I alluded to, they sounded absolutely terrible!!! I connected them to a small portable MP3 player that I carry in my shirt pocket, that is also a digital voice recorder (which I use to record various narrations of job tasks throughout my work shift), so it sports only a 3.5mm stereo phone jack w/ no bluetooth capability. It's not worth it for me to buy a bluetooth transmitter, as that is too much to carry around in my pocket; I've used those in the past & I find that the music skips as a result of the constant signal buffering. I work inside an industrial walk-in cooler, so w/ music playing, there is some noise cancellation of the din of the 12 large cooling fans, but the sound was so terrible on these phones, any level of noise cancellation was non-existent.The sound on these phones was as if I was trapped inside a large metal drum, very hollow w/ slight reverb, & there was NO dynamic response at all for any level of treble, midrange, or bass; it all sounded the same - very flat, w/ no roundness of timbre. I had to turn the volume up all the way on the MP3 player just to hear the music, & it still wasn't enough, & I don't listen to music very loudly. I have all manner of genres in my library, from classical to death metal, & it all sounded like garbage.I realize people are trending to wireless phones & earbuds, to use w/ their smartphone, but I've been shopping for phones that would meet my needs for several months now, & have found nothing suitable. I had ordered a pair of $17 Sony folding headphones (~35mm drivers), which did sound great, but as the earpiece wires were not molded to the earpiece housing, the left earpiece wire, over time w/ use, gradually frayed & broke. I tried a comparably priced pair of Panasonic phones (30mm drivers) which sounded just as bad as these Magnavox phones do. Even though these were priced around the $30 level, they sported 50mm drivers, so I was hoping the sound would be substantially better. Not so, so I'm returning them, as well.I might surmise that if these phones were used on a high quality audio system, where the volume & equalizer levels were more individually & substantially adjustable, they MAY sound better, but that's not why I purchased them. For my home stereo, I have an over-ear pair of Koss phones that I've had since 1979, which still work beautifully; if I'm listening to a symphony, I can hear the keys click on a clarinet, or if I'm listening to death metal, I can hear the singer breathe as he growls out the lyrics.Since the spectrum of human hearing is more limited than a computer, we've seen the return of vinyl LP's for dedicated audiophiles; I have an LP collection that spans the decades from the '40's (I have some of my father's LP's) to the 1990's, & I have a 1980's era Pioneer direct-drive turntable upon which I play them that still produces high quality sound -- I've only had to buy new stylus cartridges for it, which I'm thankful that Shure is still making those that fit my turntable. Why can't all of these seemingly reputable audio companies make a set of headphones for us old-school folks? It's depressing that I can't seem to find a budget-friendly quality product to suit my needs & desires; I will still have to continue to shop around.Bottom line, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend these Magnavox headphones for any use thus far. Let the buyer beware!
