How to Build a Great Home Workshop (Wood Magazine) Paperback – 1 August 2007

I had purchased Fine Woodworking Best Workshops with the hope that it would help me plan the layout for a garage workshop. While it had a lit of interesting and useful chapters, it was missing a section on the proper way to layout the machines for efficiency and practicality for a given space. This book has about 30 pages on that topic, which was great. It also has a number of good plans. I’d recommend both books, but might give this one the edge due to the layout section. If there’s a negative, it would be nice if there was an updated version of this book, as it is about 15 years old.

This gem now resides in my workshop library alongside the rest of my vintage and modern-ish workshop and 'how to' books. I stumbled onto it during a foray at our local library then quickly found and ordered it on Amazon. It is REALLY chock-full of virtually EVERYTHING associated with refining and having a successful home workshop. This book contains MUCH more information than typical books that simply show other folk's workshops...This is a reference book of workshop layout, all manner of jigs, shop tables, benches, storage ideas, keeping the air clean, heating and cooling, Electrical, safety and everything in-between. I STILL refer to and read one of my old high school text books titled "Cabinetmaking and Millwork" from 1970 and THIS "How to Build a Great Home Workshop" book will certainly reside on the same shelf.

I find myself in the same boat as many hobbist woodworkers . . . at the mercy of space and time constraints. I have taken many of the ideas from this book and found they work well for my situation. The mobile "solutions" are excellent and will allow me to tailor my workspace to serve two masters - me and the "hot rod" minivan. The diagrams and plans are accentuated with excellent photos and make contruction of the many ideas and projects that much more enjoyable. I highly recommend this to anyone with beginner to intermediate skill levels. Well worth the money.

I always find the need to make my shop better but lack the ideas.this book looks like half onthe brain will work,now i need to get motivated.withe the cold winter and even getting snow today 4-15 it takes a lot of motovation to brave the cold shop
