4 Brutal, Vicious, and Savagely Stars

*by N***G on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 17, 2014*

**** NOTE: This is 1 spoiler free review for all 3 books because I read them all in less than 3 days - you've been warned!***Fire meets ice. Love meets hate.I've to say I wanted to read the first book for a very long time. The cover spoke to me and the blurb made me snicker. I saw that the reviews were mixed and it intrigued me even more, then it was on sale and yeah I was all over it. But as the title says is, it was lovely but also very vicious. I can't remember ever reading a book that walked hand-in-hand, making me feel so much empathy & annoyance to the same time. No kidding! Isis Blake made me laugh many times but she also annoyed the heck out of me. She was immature beyond believe and her filter to shut-up was basically non-existing. She was beyond ridiculous, sometimes so weird, but always, snarky, sassy, and a smart-cookie. But she also was very broken with no self-esteem; doubts about everything that could, would involve her and she was scared....deep down she is a very scared little girl that lost 85 pounds trying to mask and forget a horrific event in her young life. Not only for me was this book a love and hate relationship but also between her and Jack Hunter. When moving to Ohio from sunny Florida she meets Jack for the first time at a party. That's also the first time she punches him square in the face. These two -shaking my head- are so awkwardly weird smart-cookies but so perfect for each other that everyone could see it BUT them! The thing is Isis still sees herself as ugly, very ugly and unlovable. The reason for her lack of self-esteem lives thousand of miles away in Florida - Nameless. He's why she is and acts the way she does; his voice always a present whisper in her mind, haunting and torturing her.I don't lie, this book(s) drove me insane. You could tell these two nuts had a serious chemistry going on but the author made it clear that whatever it's they have it can't be. Why? Well that's exactly what hooked me, reading 3 book in less than 3 days. There's a BIG SECRET involving Jack, which stretches through all 3 books and the other side-characters; people that slowly became friends with Isis. But no one could or would say something to her and the smart girl Isis is, she tries to discover bit by bit the truth for herself. They are all afraid of Jack and my curiosity was growing as I turned the pages. There's this special girl named Sophia... she and Jack are/were something. She's his precious thing but also a constant reminder of their cruel past, a past that haunts them all. Nevertheless, Isis is determined and wants to find out - oh and she does!Jake is emotionless and stoic until a certain new girl punches him. She rattles his life and for the first time he felt alive again; not being plagued by guilt he failed someone. He loves and hates her snark, her aggressiveness not giving up. but he also grows fonder and fonder of her but when reading you can tell he's having an inner battle with himself, a battle that continues throughout the books. He can't fail again; he's not allowed to feel or be happy; he will hurt again; he can't her, again.Light meets dark. Secrets meet truth.Isis learns more about her new friends and the boy she can't seem to forget or stop harassing. But she also discovers there's a side of Jack he kept hidden beyond his cold stoic mask. It's this Jack she's falling for. Despite the cruel secrets she knows, feels that there's something even though she swore herself never ever to fall in love again, to trust a man ever again, or to feel hurt - this time it might kill her for real.It was hard loving this book and I can say I didn't love this series but it had depths. When stripping away all the immature things this story was deep and I understood Isis and Jack for the way they were and acted. These books had some serious angst and suspense going on, which hooked me 100%, and it was just masked with all the joking around. But there was seriousness; lives lost, hearts broken, lies buried deep."Living is really weird. You never get used to it. But it happens anyway. And sometimes you find things that make it a little more comfortable, and you try to hold on to those things, and the tighter you hold on, the faster they slip away."I think this series, especially Isis character is not for everyone, she might turn you off - yeah she did the same to me. I enjoyed her much more in book 2+3. She was real, less snarky but still honest. She fought her demons, found out the truth about Jack and learned to love herself. She learned to live with a certain grieve (hint: the secret) and do the best out of it. She changed, but so did Jack. Both changed but it didn't hinder or lessen their undeniable (weirdo) bond. All I can advise is, give it a chance and look at the bigger meaning between the lines of Isis actions, words and in general about this story. It has some heartfelt stuff in it and is packed with angst and a thick layer of suspense. I don't regret reading this series even though I wasn't blown away. You'll def take a lot of things away from it. Jack was my favorite character in the books...you'll see why.Life meets death. The end meets the beginning. This series was vicious, brutal and savagely....just as the titles say. It's about friendships, love, death, trust, and giving/taking chances.** Overall, I gave book #1 FOUR STARS, book #2 FOUR AND HALF STARS, book #3, FOUR STARS. **

Lovely Vicious contains some of the wittiest, can’t-stop-reading, most lol-inducing writing that I’ve experienced in a while

*by A***P on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 9, 2014*

I’ve never written a book review before. This is my first. Hopefully I can make it sound intelligent. Why now? Why the need to express my feelings of this particular book through the written word—when I’ve never felt the need to do so before? Well, let me tell you…Lovely Vicious contains some of the wittiest, can’t-stop-reading, most lol-inducing writing that I’ve experienced in a very long time.Reflecting on this story made me realize something (many things) about what actually makes a good book. For me, it’s not whether the characters make the choices that I would make. Let’s face it, I’m 36 and it can sometimes be hard for me to relate to the actions or feelings of a teenager. But that did not stop me from loving this book. It’s about the writing. The absolute best part of Lovely Vicious was the dialogue. If for no other reason at all, read this book for the clever one liners and witty banter. The original humor in this story will have you laughing throughout. It’s about getting lost in the pages and forgetting everything that’s going on in real life because I want to find out what the characters are going to do (or say) next. I had a hard time putting Lovely Vicious down. I had to force myself when it got too late and I had to get up super early the next morning. When I wasn’t reveling in the creative dialogue and inner monologues of Isis Blake, I was basking in the angst of it all. Why does Jake do what he does? Why is he the way he is? When will they stop trying to hurt each other?! All are questions that forced me to keep reading. It’s about living vividly through the eyes of a character whose motives I may or may not fully understand. Whether or not I accept a character’s choices doesn’t matter because in life, a single event could affect each of us in a different way. Who am I to judge? I go into a story hoping to enjoy it. And how can I fully enjoy a story if I am judging the characters choices, or the authenticity of a scene? I like to just roll with it and let the author take me on a ride. When the writing is good like it is in this book, the ride is outstanding. It’s about accepting the book and its characters for what/who they are. Everyone has had their heart broken in one way or another. Do we all react in the same way that Isis did? Of course not. Most of us internalize the wounds, pushing the pain deep inside while pretending to be fine on the outside. But not Isis. She started a war. Instead of being passive, or passive-aggressive when it came to love, she got aggressive-aggressive. Closed off, yes, but in a completely different way than most. In a vicious-mean kind of way with someone just as vicious. And that’s what makes their story so interesting. It’s about the feeling I get when I read. This book made me happy (sometimes giddy). And frustrated. And scared and sometimes sad. Isn’t that the best thing about reading? FEELING things? For me it is. And this book made me feel lots of things.Sara Wolf, you have nailed it. Can’t wait to read book 2.
